View Full Version : 75w90 vs 140?

I was gathering some stuff to work on the Sequoia this weekend and picked up some gear oil for the diffs and t-case. I didn't look at the manual before I went and just picked up the 75w90 that I use in the FJ. Looking at the manual now and it says the rear diff should have 140. Am I correct in thinking that there isn't too much of a difference between the two? The Sequoia isn't going to be towing anything nor will it be seeing dirt (at least for the time being). Should I head back tomorrow and exchange some of the 90 for the 140?

I'd swap out to the 140 if the manual specifically states that weight. I'm not saavy on differentials, but given you have the chance to get the right oil before hand....

If it calls for 140, then that's probably what I'd do. But with the low temps we're getting into this time of year, the 90 isn't gonna hurt anything either.

It'd be like putting zero weight in your 40's crank case. Accelerated wear and the potential to bypass seals/gaskets creating leaks that weren't previously there. The lighter oil wouldn't handle the heat as well either.
