just wondering, what is the best year for a fj60[in your opinion] and why? what are the differances if any? I hear 85 thru 87 are the best.

It depends..... There are actually very few changes in the FJ60s from '82 thru '87. The biggest change is in the tranmision - the '85 thru '87 had the 4 speed with a spacer that is the same length as the 5 speed which makes the swap easier.
The engine and emissions systems are identical in the 60s. However, the state emissions requirements change ove the years with lower allowable pollutants in the late models. It has become pretty difficult to meet the Colorado '87 standards with a carbed 2F. If you're planning the swap out the engine, YRMV.
It'll be easier to maintain and license a stock '83 than an '87 although it'll likely have more rust.

Later models had headlight washers and some early models were lacking a few small features. I think more earlier models were brown, based on what I see, and brown isn't most people's favorite color. I'd look for any FJ60 that had new springs/suspension, since all will need suspension by now.

Along with the spacer style H42 (often called H42-Long), the t-case went from a 34mm idler shaft to a 38mm idler shaft with some other internal 'beefening'. Not that there are any major issues with the 34, just that the 38 is stouter.
All changes aside, my recommendation is the same as that for 40 Series shopping... Buy the cleanest body/frame/interior rig you can find, the rest is pretty easy to fix :D
