View Full Version : 78 Pics

I've been posting some lately in the tech section so I thought I should introduce myself. Fresh out of college, I moved here from Kansas in 1996 to work for a construction company. I was inflicted with the cruiser obsession in 1998 when I bought my neighbors 85 FJ60. Since then I've owned a 40, 62, and two 80's. I had the FJ40 for only a couple months but have wheeled the other cruisers all over Colorado and Moab. My wife drove the 97 for 4 years as a DD. The premium fuel (it was supercharged) and 12mpg was catching up with us. Sold the 97 and bought her an Accord and somehow convinced her that we needed a 40 "to drive in the snow". Picked up a sweet 78 from a fellow enthusiast in Woodland Park. The rig was originally from California and was brought to Colorado sometime in the mid 80's. It's all original except the lift, Aussie locker and seats. Since I owned it, I have rebuilt the front axle, tie rods, oil pan gasket (no leaks now!), SS extended brake lines, radiator, battery, and changed all the fluids. Future plans are power steering, replace the rusty rear sill, and eventually paint the rig. Drove it to work the other day and shot a couple pics. Thanks for all the tech support and kind folks on this forum. Hopefully I can join you all for a run or two next summer. Doug

Hey Doug!

Looks nice, I spy a sunroof...

Yea, there is an extremely janky sunroof that is blacked out with spray paint and leaks like a sieve. I picked up a used top from Redline but the drip edges are in pretty bad shape. I've got my eye out for a better replacement on c-list.

That's a good looking rig! Reminds me of Ken's. :thumb:

Nice! Body looks good. You and Marco can have a "40's with sunroofs" run.

Did you buy that from Luke (black95 here and on 'mud)?

I've seen this one in person. Super clean 40.

Yes...bought it from Luke. He's a good dude and made me a fair deal.

Looks like my '78! Well, it looks cleaner than my '78 did when I bought it.

Good luck with it!

This is a sharp truck with original paint (mostly). I'm urging Doug to touch up the bad areas and leave the rest OEM. Doug's truck is a time machine back to '78. It reminds me a lot of my '78 when I bought it in 1990.
