Date: Saturday Jan. 26th, 2013
Meeting Time: 9:00 am - Leave at 9:30

Meeting Place: Cemetery area half mile above (west) of Central City-the normal spot. Meet for Pizza at Beau Jo's for pizza in Idaho Springs after the run. Around 4:30-5:30pm.

CB Channel 4 - Ham 146460
Will will air down and/or chain up (if your using chains) at the meeting place. Most elect to not use chains.

Larger built rigs with winches can leave ahead of the main group closer to 9am. This should be a fairly small group.

Difficulty - this run is open to everyone. You just may not get as far as some. The only requirement is to have hard points front and rear for strapping purposes and of course a strap ready to go. A shovel and additional recovery gear is recommended.

Be prepared to stay warm and dry with winter clothing and boots. It can be really cold and windy up there.

Let's have fun!

I've made the last couple of years but it looks like I'll be out of town.
We were just up there. There was a snow drift up top but we bashed a line thru it. That allowed us to continue over to fall river road.

Anybody live up by Tim or Matt (Karma Guys)? They pulled the hood stand from that FJ60 for me today and I was wondering if someone can bring it with them next week?

Good work. Sounds like we need some more snow.

Uncle Ben will be leading the front group with the well equipt rigs.

I've got a small saw I'll bring in case we come across some down trees. Wish I had it on the St. Vrain last month!!!

Is there going to be any snow up there? If not, and if other trails are open, why don't we run another trail that is more challenging?

Coming down from the mountains Monday pretty much everything east of the Eisenhower tunnel looks like it could be summer. I had friends in town from Florida and they kept asking where all the snow was on the drive up I70!

I need to get the ole 40 out and about so this is more about a pre Moab pre-run shake down for me than anything else, plus I am hungry and I want to stick the club for sum pizza!

Air Randy
01-23-2013, 02:09 PM
I'm all for keeping it to a run that everyone in the club can do and then have pizza later. I'm just wondering if we would want to consider Spring Creek or the other trail across from it as we can still hit Idaho Springs for pizza on the way back. Yankee Hill is pretty much just driving on dirt forest roads if you dont have snow and ice to make it interesting.

Spring Creek is dangerous this time of year! The shelf road tends to freeze up and one slip could be your last. Red Elephant is right across from SC and safer but might be more challenge than your after depending on ice conditions.

I was trying to think of other options. But, I agree with Kevin. The nearby trails that are difficult like Spring Creek will often be very dangerous this time of year. Things start out dry and clear. Then you come around a corner on the norther slope and you are on an ice slab on a shelf road. That's why Yankee Hill is nice. Lack of dangerous shelf roads. Granted you can still slide into trees.

So I guess the big rigs like Randy's may not get a huge challenge this year. And we may finish early. My feelings wont be hurt if you want to try another trail in the area like Red Elephant Hill, Bill Moore or Kingston Peak. You will to find a leader. You know where the pizza will be. You can always explore the Yankee Hill side roads. There are many. Then drop down into Fall River road. Then try Kingston. The drifts are probably pretty big up there.

But, I am going to stick with the Yankee Hill plan and probably finish up late afternoon. I'm bringing a sled for that one spot near the top.

It's snowing up there right now and the wind has been gusting....hopefully it sticks!

Air Randy

I'm OK with doing YH and keeping it a group event. Good points about SC though, that shelf road would be scary if it was icey. Lets just hope for snow and wind, even a little bit would help.

.

Does anyone know if the gate was ever installed on the Kingston Peak Rd? It was supposed to be last summer and was intended to be a winter closure gate.

We werent armpit deep in snow, in fact most of the trail was either dry or just snow packed and slippery in the trees. But we did find trails up top that had snow drifts deep enough that the big rigs had to work to bust through them. Rigs got stuck and winched out. There was minor carnage from a snapped pull point and flying clevis, no injuries, the weather was great and the pizza and company were excellent. All in all a fun time for everyone.
