Hey everyone, looking for an old school Con Ferr rear seat for the 40.

If you have one collecting dust or have a lead on one, I'd love to talk.

Thanks in advance,

Drew

Hey Drew,

Sorry I'm no help with the Conferr seat, but I went through the search process last year looking for options to make my 40 more kid friendly too. I ended up shelling out the extra $ and getting the fold and tumble Bestop seat from CCOT. It just seemed like a safer and easier option and I really like that it folds out of the way when I'm solo camping. It also came with the seat belts and all required hardware.

Also, I figure I'll be the one riding in the back pretty soon, and the Bestop seat is pretty comfy too. ;)

Is it the same as the Bestop Trail Max?

Drew,

Some years ago, I obtained an old Conn-Ferr folding seat. I spend a bunch of time restoring it:

Sandblasting entire metal unit
New paint to match stock interior of my 40 (dark gray on roll bar)
Added latches to keep the back from folding up when braking
Recovered the old vinyl seat
Added seat belts

If I had to do it again, I wouldn't. The more modern seats are safer and they include head rests, which will make a difference to your kids as soon as they are out of car seats.

FYI: Iron Pig sells a fold and tumble rear seat (http://www.ironpigoffroad.com//index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=6_33&products_id=95) for the FJ40.

Yeah, I believe it is. Only difference is that the CCOT kit comes with the seat belts, fj40 mounting brackets and a brace that holds it up when folded.

Thanks Matt, that's what I needed to hear. I'd love to add some storage under whatever I pop in there. Thanks for the real world experience.

Not sure what your plans are but another option is the Suzuki Sidekick rear seats. I've got a pair that I'm mounting in the rear of my 40- above the wheel wells and tied into the cage. An adult would have to wear a helmet but the kids will be fine for many years plus they're tumble and fold. Just came across these on CL: http://denver.craigslist.org/pts/3467621948.html

If you do a search on MUD Drew, some are finding the CCOT/Bestop seat on Amazon for a lot less $$, but maybe they're missing the belts like Martin said...

CCOT also sells matching front seats too, which would be pretty sweet.

Yeah, I found the seat for less elsewhere too, but when you add up the cost of adding the belts, fabricating mounts, shipping, time, etc. it was basically a wash. I placed one order, it arrived to my door in a couple of days, and I bolted it in a couple of hours. The ease of it all made it worth the extra couple of bucks, especially when chasing a 2 year old around. Just no time these days to be scrounging junk yards, hardware stores, researching online, etc.

Yeah, I have some fancy airplane seat tracks/cargo hold downs that I will use to make the seat mounts on. If I could make the rear anchor removable and safe then I'm most likely going with the Bestop.

Drew your 40 is blue right? I wonder if this rear would fit?
