View Full Version : Colorado Camping in April

Anybody have any suggestions as where to camp in April here in Colorado? We've got two small kids and a camper. We'll be in the Moab area a couple of times so I'd like to avoid that area. However, I'm looking for an area that may have decent weather and minimal snow- Maybe the Southern part of the state? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

The sand dunes can be fun if the weather is decent. I don't know if the campground in the park is open or not in April. If you're in the area, don't miss the aligator farm.

Shelf Road, near Canon City is a popular place to climb at that time of year. It is usually a good 10 degrees warmer than Denver, almost always sunny... Oh and jaw-droppingly gorgeous. Beautiful red limestone cliffs that go on seemingly forever. There is a campground, which might be full of rowdy climbers, but the surrounding area is all BLM, so you can camp pretty much wherever you want.
You can make easy day trips from there to the Royal Gorge, The Arkansas River, and the Sand Dunes NP.
Here's a page with more information (mostly about the climbing): http://www.mountainproject.com/v/shelf-road/105744267
