This thread is to plan a pre-Cruise Moab radio tune-up. Location and date to be determined, but looking at Saturday, April 13 at 0900MDT.

Tentatively plan on a location on the north side, probably Boulder, Louisville or Broomfield sort of thing. Need to find an open space with free parking and not a lot of local RF. But I'll keep it flexible for now until I see how many people plan to attend. If there is a large south attendance I might move it more central.

EDIT:
Location is CO66 and I-25, approximately behind the U-Haul Storage at exit 243 (you can see that from I-25).
GPS coordinates 40.1999,-104.982358

Previous runs have had the group meet for breakfast if small enough or if more than a couple of ham we'll all bring something for buffet in other years. Doing the pot luck I think works best so unless there's a mutiny please consider bringing egg & ham to eat or share. I will get a pot of Einstein's coffee & bagels.

The purpose is to tune up CB, VHF, UHF and HF antennas and fix straightforward radio problems. There will be basic tools & parts (like connectors, coax), test equipment, a soldering iron. Please don't expect to do a complete installation or extensive troubleshooting & diagnostics on your gear.

I will have a small HF-capable station set-up to operate and demonstrate if there's interest.

This will coincide with a couple of special events. A couple of stations will be commemorating the 101st anniversary of the journey of RMS Titanic. W1MGY will be on the air 1400Z-2030Z (we are GMT-6 in MDT), so maybe we'll hear them and log a contact. Also W4S will be operating on 4/13-4/14 1400Z-2000Z to remember the sinking (it hit the iceberg on the 14th and she sunk on the 15th).

Also NI6IW will be activated 1600Z-2259Z for an event. NI6IW is the USS Midway (CV-41), Decommissioned 1992, San Diego. The event highlights the creation of the Navy Chief Petty Officer Grade on April 1, 1893. Don't have much additional information on the event.

I should mention if anyone knows of an issue or parts they need, let me know ahead of time so that we can source them.

Awesome! thanks for putting this together, Dave, I'll do my best to participate between soccer games. You're welcome to all my gear for this for demo purposes. http://www.risingsun4x4club.org/uploads/smileys/tinfoilhat3.gif

I know weekends can be tough, so if there is a better day/time that fits more schedules please say so. I would like a lot of people to make it since I'm sure there are a fair number of stations that have been neglected and under used.

I've got a CB swr meter (well, Old40dog has it now, but you know what I mean)...and I have the MFJ Ham SWR meter that will tune 70cm, too.

I'd like to learn a little more about trimming an antenna for better CB performance. I have one that pegs the SWR meter and it's adj. to it's shortest length. (making it longer makes the SWR worse).

I also have that RF interference going on with my fridge, depending on the turnout, I may look for some advice and diagnosis on that. :hill:

I need/will to attend. My CB reception blows...3 trucks ahead of me 3 trucks behind is about as good as it gets.

Ham could use a check up.

C'mon down and watch these kids play. It's pretty exciting. We're in Colorado Storm Soccer, it's very competitive even at the 5-6 year old level.

I just finished up coaching 6 year old basketball for the season. Kids sports are a lot of fun....... Maybe not as fun if its not your own kids playing though.

Just keep wearing a condom Marco and you'll be fine. :)

Our game isn't until 3:00 that day so I'd be up for some ham and eggs in da morning.

I was just kidding, I played a ton of soccer back in the day, I know its fun to watch and participate :D

Matt, you are funny.

Hey Dave, any updates on a location here? There was a bit of interest at the meeting last night...

04-04-2013, 03:35 PM
I could offer up my new place...it is is North Golden, right along 93. I am on about 20 acres, there is even a spot on my property a good 1/2 mile away on the other side of a berm (Denver Water property-Ralston Res.) and there is also a gravel road that goes up the foothiils a ways for more line of sight testing or go behind some big rocks. :) We *just* moved last weekend, so my shop/barn is packed full of crap we need to sell but I might have some of it cleaned out by then so we would have a decent workspace also, especially if it rains. I might even have a rig by next weekend to test out my HAM and CB radios.....let me know, I think either day will work for me (or both?)

Hey Dave, any updates on a location here? There was a bit of interest at the meeting last night...
I apologize for the lack of updates. I was working on lining up a new truck work day in parallel and wanted to make sure the date did not conflict.

We are good to go still for Saturday 4/13/13.

I do not have a location selected. Does anyone have an issue with Tim's place? It's further south than I anticipated but fine with me. If people had their heart set more north I will pick something this weekend. Suggestions happily welcomed.

Is this occurring? Is it at Tim's place? Has a firm time been selected?
Should I PM Tim if it is to get a location so that he doesn't post his address on the forum for the world to see (I personally wouldn't publicly post my address although I sure we could all be found on the Internet somewhere).

This is definitely occurring, if there is interest. Please post or PM if you are coming. I don't need a firm count but a rough idea would be nice.

Date is still Saturday, 4/13.

Location is TBD. I have a potential site, I-25 and CO66, east of Longmont. There is supposed to be a large, suitable field that would be easy to access off the interstate.

I would be happy to help anyone tune up and fix their radios but if it's only gonna be a couple of trucks I'd rather do it at home or something.

Dave, here's a picture of that lot you're talking about. Unless it's snowing, this place would be easy to setup/test whatever, and it's right off the highway as you say.

I've got soccer until 10:00, then again at 2:00, but hope to get up there between 11 and 1?

DaveInDenver

I will shoot down there ASAP (maybe today still) and check it out. Let's call this the location for now. Tentatively plan for 0900 to 1300 at this point.

From another thread,

I'll bring it all to Ham & Eggs this Saturday, hope to be there by 11:00, need to leave by 1:00, but it takes about 1 minute to dump the data once the laptop is fired up. Good times..
That reminds me, I will have our laptop with me so I will be able to program radios. Not the Chinese ones, just Yaesu VX-6, VX-7, FT-60 FT-8800, FT-350, FT-857/897, FT-817, FT-950 or Icom IC-7000.

The GPS coordinates for the location are 40.1999,-104.982358

In. :thumb: Weather should be good too.

Dave can you program a Yaesu FT-2900R?

DaveInDenver
04-10-2013, 08:36 AM
Negatory on the FT-2900 Red Leader. The club has a couple of FT-2800s so maybe we have software or at least the cable. I'll check and see, if I can come up with it I'll bring it along.

The software and cable:
https://www.rtsystemsinc.com/FT-2900-programming-software-and-USB-cable-s/1897.htm

RT Systems is here in Colorado now, so an order comes the next day (or same day if you pick it up in Broomfield). I don't have a FT-2800 or FT-2900 otherwise I would buy it.

Edit to add:
I can probably also program VX-2, VX-5 and FT-60 HTs and there is a fair chance I might also be able to handle FT-7800 and FT-8900 (I have the cables). I could also do the FT-1802 and FT-2800, UV-3R and UV-5R if we have or find cables for them.

I have the CHIRP software, which is an open source GNU programming platform that attempts to move towards a unified programmer with vendor specific drivers. In my experience it has mixed results but I'm willing to try cloning if you are.

I will be there as close to 9AM tomorrow as I can and will plan to stay until 1PM. After party at Big Choice, so if you come late and no one's at the first location go to the fall back position. Tunes and fixes done at BCB enjoy no warranty protection. :-)

Simplex talk in will be 147.420MHz (Rising Sun #3).

Backup will be 147.540MHz (RS #4).

Repeater will be the 147.225MHz/+0.600/107.2Hz CRA machine since it's linked to 145.460/-0.600/107.2Hz in Boulder, 145.160MHz/-0.600/107.2Hz in the Springs.

Backup will be 145.145/-0.600/107.2Hz.

CB is channel 4

Backup will be channel 3.

If anyone wants to try UHF, I usually monitor the RMRL repeater at 449.450MHz/-5.0/103.5Hz but this will be on a secondary basis, no promises.

Holy smokes this is the farm pig and brown eggs run meeting in longmont ;)

I doubt i'll trek all the way up there. Anyone on the southside want to meet and we can talk to the other group up north? Be kinda cool to have 2 locations anyway...

We've got soccer all morning. I should be able to make it there by 11:45. I'll bring my mfj swr meter, and some random power pole stuff.

Wes, why don't we do that. We can meet over near the Ham Radio Outlet on Evans east of 25. I need a new cable.
They don't open until 10am though, so food first. :)

Good talking with you Tim and Perry. My radio install in the FJ60 seems to be functional. :thumb:

I was listening and calling occasionally most of the morning, but didn't make contact with anyone else today. I was on the 147.225 repeater and 147.420 and 146.460 simplex.

How did it go Dave?

Shoot :(

I should have driven my truck on Saturday to soccer and chatted with you guys...We were in Boulder around 8am and headed to Littleton at about 11am. The family could have just shook their heads at me :hill:

Stan, we'd have to check with Dave/Tim but I "might" be able to help you program your radio...Not sure what I have for my FT-8800 will work though based on what Dave stated above...
