It seems the manuals for the 2001 Taco are as rare as hen's teeth and out of print (seriously Helms/Toyota, just as these trucks enter their extended service life). Can anyone tell me if the books for the 2000, 2002, 2003, etc. are close enough?

2002 and up yes, 2000 may be a little different... 2001 to 2004 was that generation, in fact I can't recall any changes at all betweeen 2001 and 2002, and I owned both of them at one time. However the changes were mostly cosmetic, if you're messing with the 5vz-fe then really you can grab just about anything as you know they're all over the place.

edit: I may have one, will look this weekend Dave. It would only be a Haynes/Chilton though, not true fsm...

If you have the Haynes/Chilton that would be fantastic. LMK what you want for it. Even if/when I do find a FSM I keep a Haynes in our vehicles for times when you might get stuck away from home or a computer with Internet access.

Yeah, you mean NCTTORA. It's stupid, Toyota made them take all the PDFs down but not sure what market they are protecting since Helms is sold out on the print copies. Electronic copies don't do me much good in the garage, though.

Try Faxon Auto Literature. 1-800-458-2734 Travis #115. I bought two original (orange cover) used Hi-Lux manuals in very good condition from them. Good luck Dave. I'll be on the look out at Goodwill and the antiquarian book stores.

Yeah sorry Dave, I looked man and don't seem to have it anymore. Probably gave it to the guy I sold my last Taco to.

X2 on Faxon. I just looked and it appears they have some 2001 manuals, Dave. Dean suggested Faxon to me as well and I got a FSM for my hilux, which was Waaay out of print. I was even able to talk to real person when I called. ;)

I've had pretty good luck finding stuff like this on Ebay too.

Just got off the horn with Faxon, none of 2001 in stock. She's calling around to see what she can shake loose. I have been watching eBay for a couple of weeks. Tried to buy a set with a max bid of $275 and lost out to an eventual high bidder of $365. This for the two-volume repair manuals, no electrical manual or anything.

The reason for the question in the first place was to see if I could widen the net beyond 2001. If I can find 2002-2004 for a decent price I might go that way. Faxon has used 2002 for $229 ($140 is what Helms lists as new, but no stock). Sometimes I wonder what Toyota is thinking. These trucks are starting to come to the people who will be keeping them going for their second decade and the market is stymied.

Complete FSM's should be in every TOYOTA, securely stowed, at the time of manufacture. I do not understand their thinking today either.

I'm also making an assumption that Toyota is behind the curve, it could just be a temporary situation because of a demand spike. I am on the list from Helm when they come back in stock and so the list may just be growing until they get enough on it to do a print run. Toyota is all about just in time, so no sense printing a bunch of 2-inch thick manuals that will just sit on the shelf for 5 years. My guess is most dealerships have the manuals as electronic files and it's just knuckleheads who still want printed manuals.

Talked to Chris @ Faxon. No go anywhere and apparently one of their toughest to find. :-/
