Hi all,

I wanted to start planning a date for getting up to Argentine for the 1st cleanup run.

My schedule is dictating that June 23 is going to be the best date to do this cleanup.

I want to encourage everybody to consider coming on this run - it's fun, relaxing, family friendly, beautiful scenery, interesting history, and the club provides lunch!

Also, to encourage newer club members to consider joining Rising Sun's efforts in Land Use activities, I want to propose something new: for anybody that has never been on a cleanup run in the past, I will be raffling off a Rising Sun logo'd Trasharoo bag at the beginning of the trail run, which can be put to use right away!

So come out, have a good time, give back to the sport we all enjoy so much, and win some schwag while you're at it!

If anybody is interested in leading any portion of this trip, we can maybe plan on splitting into two or more groups to cover more ground! Let me know if you're interested!

And if anybody is interested in joining the Land Use team, just let me know! :thumb: We have two Adopt-a-Roads: Leavenworth/Argentine and Jenny Creek! :thumb:

PLAN

Where: Argentine Pass pulloff. If you don't know how to get there meet me at the visitor center in Georgetown no later than 8:30 (let me know if I should be expecting you, if you need my number it's in the roster or you can PM me).

For those that have never been, 248.1B has a decent creek crossing that can get a little deep in the spring. 248.1B is also a little on the narrow side for those of you worried about pinstriping. Nothing too major though, a truck on stock tires should be fine with some careful driving.

Keep checking this post for updates, see you there! :thumb:

I'm in for June 30. Work at firestation on the 9th. Just got back from CM13 and everyone had a "Trash-A-Roo bag" but me! :( Would love to win one! We'll also be up in the area for the GeorgeTown "Slacker Race" on Sat June 22. We will check out Argentine then.

Not quite sure where to post this since I don't belong here.

At the first left by the 'power thingy' someone droped off a sofa. Yea, that's right a SOFA!!

Up on 248.1 there is an abandon Ford explorer Co. plate 249-UFP. It looks like they had to spend the night up there with a fire in the middle of the road. They also trashed the area pretty good with beer cans and other garbage. We picked most of it up and put it back into the truck through a broken window in the rear, so it's starting to get vanlalized. Talked to C.C. Ranger today and the were unaware of it.

Down on 'B' rd. where the creek overflows the road, at that camp site, there is a 12-14" tree down. Also at the second ck. crossing idiots were once again target shooting and left a **** load of busted clays all over that area and in the creek.

So, that's about it other then the usual amount of trash ppl like to leave behind that we could see.

Lots of good camping. The lower road is probably where most folks will be. Not a bad idea to head up with someone familiar with the area.

Just want to bump this for interest - it's only two weeks away! If you're planning on coming and haven't posted up, please post up so we can get an estimate of how many we need to plan for for lunch! Please check the first post to see if you're accounted for there. Yes, the club is buying lunch for all participants!

Also, if this is your first cleanup run with Rising Sun, I will be raffling off a Rising Sun logo'd Trasharoo bag! That's good incentive to get new faces involved with our Land Use efforts!

If available, we'll be in one of the larger sites on the right of the road as you're heading up, hopefully the big flat one before the lefthand switchback- off the main pass road, not the Leavenworth Creek road by the river. The river sites are better campsites, but seeing as how we need to be back at the bottom first thing Sunday why make things difficult- plus we'll have more space down below, the ones up higher are really best for 2-3 trucks max.

for anyone who hasn't been there before here are your directions: as soon as you leave pavement you'll go over what's likely the rockiest section of the entire trail system in the first 100 yards or so, then you hit a switchback, then get to a junction. take a right. If you go left it dead ends (feel free to explore, there's a cool spur that dead ends at the top of a small waterfall. So anyway you went right, you'll meander for a bit then at a right-hand switchback you'll see a spur to your left headed up the drainage- that doesn't really go anywhere, stay right and head up the main road. Look to the right, that's where we should be camped... if you see a group of moderately build Land Cruisers, yeah that's probably us. If you don't see anyone, then keep going- the road switches back left, then you'll see the Adopt-a-Road sign, then you'll get to another right-hand switchback where there's a spur to the left- take that, as it's the Leavenworth Creek section... we'll figure out a spot. Shout out on your radio if you feel you are lost.

I'm curious what the deal is with this cabin. It looks like people have been camping out there from time to time. (these pictures were from 2010) Can someone do that? Is the Forest service cool with people camping out for a night in the cabin? :dunno: I think it would be pretty cool to do that one weekend.

I think (but don't quote me) the Forest Service discourages folks from camping in structures like this that aren't maintained. It's simply a collapse hazard (honestly I would rather sleep outside in a tent than under that roof). But I doubt it is against any kind of law. The Forest Service is planning on closing off motorized access to that cabin, so in a couple years it will only be hiking access and will probably be a lot less used.

As of 6-19-'13:

Here's the lower road sign.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m110/shotshell/IMG_1544.jpg (http://s102.photobucket.com/user/shotshell/media/IMG_1544.jpg.html)

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m110/shotshell/IMG_1539.jpg (http://s102.photobucket.com/user/shotshell/media/IMG_1539.jpg.html)

Up at the top, by the first mine and the metal patrol shed, there are hundreds of shotgun shells.
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m110/shotshell/IMG_1542.jpg (http://s102.photobucket.com/user/shotshell/media/IMG_1542.jpg.html)

And there are some other odd items that we'll probably want to haul out.
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m110/shotshell/IMG_1543.jpg (http://s102.photobucket.com/user/shotshell/media/IMG_1543.jpg.html)

The upper road has two patches of ice, and the lower road has one. (Nothing we can't handle.)
No trees in the way.

Yes there is, as I'm sure you know, a lot of "historical Garbage". And of course, that gets left alone. But there is some plywood and what's left of a light duty metal door and what looks like an IKEA bed frame up by the patrol cabin. Looks like stuff people have brought up there to shoot at.

Interesting, we should leave the pull tab Coors cans shot full of holes? Definitely any cans that used a church key would be historical.

You know the pull tab was invented 50 years ago in 1963. Iron City Beer from Pittsburgh, PA was the first one and within a year all the breweries were using them.
