Red Cone is open?

Yeah, I'd call ahead and make sure, but I'd bet you can't get up too far, with all the snow.

Red Cone is open?
No clue. Way, way, way last minute... Like 15 ago. Just want to get to the hills

I can't imagine it's open very far up. Nothing wrong with camping down low though. Those spots in the trees by the tiny creek are nice.

Maybe the crew plowing Independence Pass finished ahead of schedule and headed over to Red Cone?

Maybe the reeking crew.

I was up in the Guanella pass area, which is just over the mountain from Red Cone, the weekend before last and there were some serious ice obstacles that were very much still under tree line. I would say that you would be hard pressed to make it above tree line now.
But never then less, it sounds like great fun.:thumb:
Are you planning on camping at the Hand Cart campground? About four weeks ago it was covered in snow, and that was as far as I could make it down that trail.

I was planning on just staying @ the last established campground, not sure the name

Yeah, you'll probably hit snow, a lot or a little, hard to say. It's all for fun, get as far as you can and see. Just stay flexible & safe and know when to turn around. This year is more normal than last year, which was a very poor snow year. Red Cone was open IIRC by June last year but normally it's more of a July trail.

I remember when we used to go up there in the mid 80's on Memorial Day weekend and we would get maybe a mile or two before hitting 3-4 foot drifts. That area can get alot of snow.
