I'm looking for different ways to get into Steamboat, particularly from the east (i.e., Walden area). Any suggestions? I've been reading about Buffalo Pass which looks like a good option. Is that drive passable in an AWD CUV?

Let me know what other options are out there, and whether it would require a high clearance 4WD vs. an AWD crossover.

Too funny. I'll be posting my Ellis Trail pictures from one week ago soon.

What the hell is a "AWD CUV"?

There are only two other ways. Buffalo Pass is direct from Walden and doable in most passenger cars with careful driving. Ellis Trail is where Land Cruisers roam (and other Toyota 4x4s). Close to the Ellis Trail but doable by car is FS550 from Hog Park Reservoir.

Crossover - unibody, AWD, IFS/IRS, ground clearance like a Subaru, no low range, car-based durability, etc.

Fine for Buffalo Pass. Not for the Ellis Trail. Ellis is high clearance 4wd and doing it solo I used my lockers a few times.

Buffalo pass is beautiful. I recommend it.

Agreed f
Also for Buffalo Pass. Beautiful up there. Seen Subarus and other cars on it.
