View Full Version : Emmisions without a front drive shaft?

So it is time again (every 5 years) to get an emissions test on my 78 fj40. However, after putting on a lift I need to do some modifications to my front drive shaft before I can put it back on. It is more than just an extension, I will likely have to do a cut and turn and a double CV so it is more than just an overnight job.

Maybe this is a dumb question but does anyone know whether I will run into trouble at the emissions joint without a front drive shaft. I don't remember them putting it in 4 wheel drive and don't see why they would need to but it was so long ago. I also remember there is a visual inspection but I doubt they flag anything other than emissions stuff.

Does anyone know? I would rather not go twice.

Hey Justin,

You shouldn't have a problem. I had an inspection a couple months back on my 1976-40 and I know they never put it in 4 wheel drive. My experience is that the air care folks actually have pretty limited mechanical knowledge. I usually watch them try to open the hood for several minutes and then walk over and show them how.

Not a problem. Roll thru the 2wd lanes
