View Full Version : Help Save My FJ40!

Kind of embarrassed to post this, but desperate times call for desperate measures. I'm laid of again and my finances are in a shambles going into the winter months. I am hoping to return to my Forest Service job in the Spring, but I need some work to get through the next 5 or 6 months. I've put out lots of applications, but no luck yet. If I can't find something soon, I am going to be listing my FJ40 up for sale in order to have some emergency cash on hand. I really really don't want to sell it. I can't even get unemployment because I used it last winter when I was down with an injury and laid off with no health benefits.

I have a pretty broad work history, so let me know if you have any leads. I have experience in healthcare, biotech, graphics, art, the outdoor industry, forestry, manual labor, etc. I'm up for just about anything. Thanks!

DirecTV is always looking for Customer Care agents, located in DTC. Check their website out and the careers link at the bottom. Not glorious, nor will it earn you a million dollars, but can help pay the bills.

Thanks for the tip.

Thanks Ken, I contacted Christo awhile ago and he was only interested in filling the position permanently rather than the 6 months I had available.

I know a guy who works for UPS seasonally for the holidays. I know nothing more about it, but you might check that out?

i worked there for a couple of years when i was doing my photography full time. the hours suck, the pay is all right but since it's teamsters, the health benefits are really really good.

if you decide to go that route, you want to be a loader for the drivers. try not to get stuck in the semis.

you'll be amazed that people actually get their packages. more importantly, you'll be doubly amazed that the stuff in those packages isn't crushed beyond all recognition...

Here's an ad on Pinecam for construction labor (http://www.pinecam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=82&t=178875&sid=27646b7ac88e0bba1319a89e680f7571). And another for carpentry help (http://www.pinecam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=82&t=178740&sid=27646b7ac88e0bba1319a89e680f7571). You might want to post up your availability and skills on there, you never know.

If things get bad I'm sure I can help out otherwise. :) Talk to me before you put her up for sale.

Yup, UPS will likely have lots of positions available over the holidays. They hire a lot of temporary work for that time.

Very sorry to hear about this Martin. If I come up with anything else, I'll post up immediately.

Thanks guys.

Good idea regarding UPS. I'll look into it and see how far away the nearest facility is. I worked a year for UPS when I was in college, so I know what I would be in for there. I loaded the semis and had bruises from ankles to armpits from getting clobbered by packages on that conveyor. It was alright work though and I would have done it a second year if they hadn't gone on strike.

Denver fire is taking application this month. I believe it's an "on-line" process. With that being said, it's generally a 6 month to 2 year dealhttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/11/09/7ynamumu.jpg

I know Riverstone Residential is hiring maintenance techs. They were a good company to work for. The property I left, Heritage Creek, is in desperate need of help. Arturo Araiza was a good guy to work for too.

Kind of a haul for you but I am looking for a dayshift manufacturing machine operator. Pay is fair but good benefits aren't bad. Health and dental are paid for the employee as well as vacation ....

I'm sorry to hear about that Martin, and I wish I could help.
Don't be embarrassed to ask for help though, not much one can do about getting laid off.
When I was out of work for a while I lined up odd jobs for friends and family, not full-time work but helped out a little bit.

Hey Martin,
If you are comfortable with doing some cruiser work for immediate cash, I've got a bunch of projects that are more or less over my head. If you think you can do them I'd be happy to pay you for the work. I also have a ton of fire mitigation work to do on our property. Given your experience with the forest service, you might be able to do some of that on for us as well if you are interested. It wouldn't be full time, permanent work, but we could help you make some bucks until a more permanent answer comes up. Hit me up if you are interested. PM works, or e-mail me at arussell at Kidrobot.com (swap the, "at" for @).
Best,
Abe

Great tips everyone, thanks, and keep them coming!

Going to hit the job fair at Keystone tomorrow (thanks Chris!) I was also a ski shop manager and tech in college, so maybe an opportunity there. Funny actually, here I am, struggling to get jobs I had in college while getting my degrees... Should have just skipped the degrees I guess! The really sad part is that these jobs seem to pay the same (or worse) than when I worked them 10 years ago! :o

Just an update. Have applied for over 20 jobs in the last month. Only 1 call back, which I missed, and the job filled that day. Nothing else... Looks like the old 40 has got to go. :(

Hello Martin, Don't sell your 40 yet. There must be something else we can do. The spirit of Woody Guthrie is holding up a pointed stick at mac d's.

Layton Truck (Colo Springs plow/truck service joint) is hiring, and I wonder if there aren't snow plow driver/seasonal winter things in Denver? Lawn/Garden joints are usually hugely backlogged with snowblower repair this time of year, if you have experience with that.

One of the big drawbacks to living in the hills is that there are very few jobs close by, and driving an hour+ each way for a $10 hr job is a wash after childcare and gas.

Thanks for the replies and encouragement.

Martin,

If you go after this and you need a geek brush up on anything, get in touch. More than happy to spend some time getting you up to speed. It'd be a helluva lot more fun teaching you then spending time doing "real" work anyway. :hill:

Let me know.

Martin, Healthcare is booming right now. Take a look at the hospitals near you, they are connected to larger networks, like Exempla, Centura Health. Lots of positions open and once your in, your in...

Also check Mckesson's web site, they have several main offices in Westminster. Some of these jobs are work from home.

Well I could think of a lot worse places than Carson's so I'm sure the 40 will have a great time down there. I know there's another in your future, now you can focus on getting past this chapter and onto something else. Heck, we'll both have another 40 some day.. here's a run I know you remember

I've admired this 40 for years.

I'm a custodian/guardian for the time being and will take care of her and keep the spirit alive. However, I really want it to end up back in his garage sooner or later. :)
