View Full Version : FJ40 Creeping Idle?

All-
I have a question I was hoping to get some opinions on. I recently re-timed the 40 and then set the idle at 650rpm. In the mornings have to start it with at least half choke and it fires right up, after warming up and taking the choke off the idle is about 650-700. After driving to work or running errands the idle will be at 700-850. What could be causing this? I've been kicking around the idea of doing the lean-drop method of setting the idle to get to a base-line but wanted some other thoughts.

How about a vacuum leak (manifold?) that seals up when the engine comes up to temperature? I would certainly do the lean-drop method (and check the carb bolts, and manifold bolts while you're at it) and see if that fixes it.

I see in your sig line that the rig has been re-smogged. There are a number of subsystems in the emissions mess that control idle speed and could be responsible for the observations.

Jeff, not a bad idea.. I don't relish the idea of going and testing the small parts all over again, but it's worth a shot.
