Amidst employment changes, family demands, and Government shutdowns, Caribou Sandstorm was able to secure a couple backcountry passes for the Maze area, Dollhouse camps. Knowing time was of the essence, and numbers were limited, he reached out to a few Maze veterans for a return to our heartland.

The place hasn't changed a bit since we were back there a couple years ago, which is just right.

Couple pictures...

Convoy'd with you guys for a bit on the drive back this afternoon. Looked like a nice adventure. Hope you had a great trip!

Sorry, I would have waved but I didn't know the secret hand signal.

This was me...

Great trip! Hard to believe we are already home and back in the routine of life..

Here are a few pics, and a few notables...

1) We ran into an older couple checking out Robbers Roost Cabin/Springs at the same time we were there. As I remember the story, she is the great granddaughter of Justinsen Flats area, the sheep herder side of the family and he is the great grandson of the cattle herder/sheriff's side that was moving in on her grand father's grazing land. Both grandfather's were shot in a dispute over the land. The outlaws protected the sheep herder side of the family, and shot his grandfather.. My facts are probably close but not perfect. But super cool we happened upon these folks at the same random time.

2) Also ran into a solo Land Rover Discovery guy, Clint, as we were leaving the Doll House. Burnt Orange Disco with black band on the side with the word "Trek" on it, CO plates. He said this was his 50th anniversary of coming into the Maze. He only looked 60 maybe..

Every good desert trip begins with a stop at the Hot Tomato!

Back home again . . . another great trip resulting in 3500+ miles added to the odometer. It was nice to meet several new faces on this run too.

Those strong winds in Colorado resulted in 14 tornadoes in the midwest and a pear tree destroying some gutters on my house. A hassle for me but no big deal compared to what many in Illinois have to deal with after these storms. It would have happened whether I had been home or not.

Fun trip! Hope the cop was lenient on you for touching the white line in the wind! He probably pulled you over because of the Indiana plates.

Thanks for posting pics guys. I didn't get to take very many and only had my phone anyway. Pictures just don't do that place justice!

He said my plates came up as expired. I had the "14" sticker on the plate and, of course, I had my current registration and all and he double checked them. He said fake "14" stickers on the plates are common but said Indiana did not update my plate when I last renewed them so I have to stop at the DMV. When he pulled me over, I thought maybe I was dropping dirt chunks on the highway from the wheeling I did in Uncompahgre before running the Maze. The trooper was cool (no ticket or written warning) and all was fine.

Hey for anyone else wishing to get out there, obtaining a permit can be done on line at http://www.nps.gov/cany/planyourvisit/backcountrypermits.htm. They have an availability calendar on line and everything..

You can almost have your pick of the place November through February, as long as you don't mind shorter days and crisper nights, snow is rarely an issue. Peak season is April-May and September.. my favorite time of year is likely October, though the last week of April/first week of May ain't so bad either.

Point being, if you think you need to get out there then you should just make that happen. :)

Yep it is easy to get to, well marked. The only difference is this is not BLM camping. You gotta really be on your best to limit your impact on the region. They require PET toilets and wood burning is not allowed, so propane fire pits are perfect.

Stepping out of the truck to snap a pic means you gotta watch your step and avoid the Crypto.. Lots of rules in the park but the result is a pristine and timeless experience every time you visit.

I did not post this an open invite run this year cause we did not want to compete with The Outlaws run attendance and after speaking to a few past Mazers, we had more than the ideal number for this small vehicle run. Also some folks had asked this fall when we were returning to the area and we included them.

The Maze camp areas have limits for rigs per camp, i.e. 3 camp areas at the Doll House and only 2 camp areas at the Maze. The Doll House has a limit of 3 rigs per camp area and the Maze Overlook allows 3 rigs at one camp and only 2 at the other. Luckily there is limited overflow parking near these camp areas, for one or 2 extra rigs.

Some camp spots also have people limits. I.E. Doll House is 3 rigs per camp area and 9 people per camp area. So some room for open seats to join.

We offered open seats to a bunch of friends and club members and a few took us up on that.

Also you have to keep the rig numbers down so you can keep rolling in enough time to get to the Doll House before dark. You gotta cover a ton of ground on this trip. 3 hours to Hans Flat from Green River and 4-6 hours to Doll House from Hans Flat Ranger station. With short days it is a long day in the saddle.

The time we have been choosing is the first full moon in November. The full moon adds to the night experience and makes for better visibility.

We have been back there now 3 out of the last 4 years, so probably time to go somewhere else in Southern Utah.. Which means if you wanna go at this time next year, you will have zero competition for camp sites. ;) when I made the reservation, there were no reservations in the entire Canyonlands National Park. So always a good time to pick your favorite spot.

11-21-2013, 08:16 PM
That's pretty standard, I believe at Devil's Kitchen (just across the river from Doll House) the posted limit is 3 vehicles and 10 people per camp. Having camped at both a few times now, I'd say Devil's Kitchen is better if you have a family (less driving, more at-camp recreation) and Doll House is more better for a group of guys who like to drive. :)

CHAIN UP and let's roll !

Problem is a roll could be very likely. Most chains don't offer much lateral stability. On a shelf road that could be a recipe for disaster. I would also expect a snow-covered road like that to multiply your travel time by many times. Might be hard to get from site to site in one day? I don't know the routes or distances

Not saying it could not be done. But you would want a VERY experience crew in recovery techniques. As I would expect it could turn into an entire day of recovery operations just to move forward. Leading truck better have a couple land anchors.

Basically like driving around my neighborhood today :lmao: Wet heavy snow broke the welds on the loader's plow blade. It took both lockers to get out of my driveway and tool around a little.

Caribou Sandstorm

The nice thing about going into the Maze is you can skip the Flint and enter from the south near Hite or via Poison Springs Wash road. So we could do a winter trip in there.

I would be up for it.

I would leave the trailer at home.

I have a real quiet time at work between Christmas and New Years. Family would be in town. Wonder if I could peel off for say 3-4 days. Might be fun to just rollin via Hite. Roll out the same way or Poison Springs.

Winter trips into the Maze can be quite memorable, the place is already quiet, add a blanket of snow and zero traffic and it is almost eerie. As noted road in from Poison Springs is doable with a bit of snow, as is the Hans Flat Route. We tried to battle our way back up the Flint Trail switchbacks when they had 12-18" of snow... wasn't happening, not enough runway to get speed in the corners and while we were towards the top, the last little bit wasn't happening.

Yea - there's really no reason to try those switchbacks with snow and ice present - unless you enjoy bobsledding.... Plenty of fun to be had coming in from the south or via Poison Springs.

It's $30 per site, and each site usually supports 3 vehicles. You can make the reservation and pay online, and then pick up the permit on your way in Moab at the central reservation office, or at Hans Flat when you enter the Maze.
