I'd like to offer an informal class this spring, probably early March late May time frame. I will update this thread with specifics as they firm up but do want to start planning so that people who want to sit in can offer schedule, location and topics.

It will definitely not be the rush-rush licensing test normally presented, although if someone wanted to prep for the test before Cruise Moab and summer wheeling we'd cover material that would be helpful, if maybe a bit beyond to someone totally unfamiliar. All will be welcome but understand that the class will be mainly to cover topics for semi-active operators who want to advance their understanding or might be prepping for upgrading their license so I would prefer not to start at the very beginning so being familiar with your typical 2m FM mobile or HT is probably the pre-req. What we'll do is start to understand the why and how behind the junk so that you can start to see why some of us are so into it.

At this time no test session is planned but if there is interest and a suitable location is found I will consider proctoring one. It hinges on being able to rope in two Extra class VEs because I would prefer a test session that can offering license upgrading. If that does happen then Technician test would be available, too.

Number of people accommodated will depend on where I can find a place. My current thought is to schedule a room at a library or something for a couple of hours one evening for a few weeks. I appreciate Nathaniel letting us use the BCB upstairs but I think the subject matter requires something less distracting. Although having a beer while discussing wouldn't be all bad...

Date: TBD
Location: TBD

Topics (Suggested):

Math and Science for Amateurs (Radio ones, too)
Wide, Wide World of Operating Modes
Propagation and EM Waves!
Understanding and Farming Antennas
On-Air Protocol (HF and DX-centric)

Sweet! definitely interested here.
Your comments during the recent licensing cram session set off the light bulb, so looking your way for input. :-)

Mainly I need to find a suitable place that isn't a million miles away for me. Ideally Longmont but I know that is a haul for Denver and especially south side hams.

I think holding it Friday evening or maybe being winter with a minimum of kid duty things on Sat or Sun mornings could help with a longer drive. I'd prefer Thursday if possible but really any evening could work for a couple of hours if it's no more than Broomfield, Thornton, etc.

I am definitely interested. I'm in Louisville, so I'm sure any location that would work for you would work for me. Currently have a job that will tie me up Tuesday and Wednesday evenings… Looking for a second job, so can't fully commit to anything yet.

I'm in. Great idea, Dave!

I've been trying to plug through the ARRL General Book after kids' bedtime. And let me tell you...if you have insomnia, borrow that book, crack it open at 9pm and you'll be asleep by 9:08pm.

I'd be down.

Also, I seem to think BCB would work......

monday, tues, wed evenings would work best for me. We are typically in the mountains on the weekends.

I'm interested in this, too. Sounds like it would exercise my brain.

...as I could really use the motivation of a class to work towards learning the material to someday upgrade to General class and the HF frequency privileges that would go with it.

Also, as I am currently working up in Mead, I would put in another vote for weeknights at BCB.

Cheers and Happy New Year!!!

I'd be interested in auditing this as a refresher. I'm always interested in basking in your intellectual glow Dave. :D

This will have to be moved back until late spring or early summer. Just too much to cram into this spring. Will be after Cruise Moab but not too far into the meat of the summer. Late May, early June?

I'm also looking into a place to meet. Would anyone have heartache if I was to rent a small meeting room maybe at the Longmont library or something? This would mean there could be a small cost would be involved.

.... Late May, early June? With Field Day as a graduation exercise?

I'm still interested, but probably won't make too many of the classes. Will be back to being employed by then and will be working most evenings. Would be totally ok to chip in on a meeting place for any classes I can attend.

That's part of the reason it needs to move, hopefully I have some sort of a job by then too. Should be done with a class on REVIT on May 8th and we won't be hemorrhaging money. I could probably start it in April but that would run into Cruise Moab preps and no one will attend.

Field Day, what a good idea. That would be June 28, 2014.

This whole thing is informal with no specific agenda other than to share ham knowledge. I'm at the whim of people who want to join in, so you guys tell me when is good and I will work around it.

Now that Cruise Moab has passed any more thoughts on when this might happen? I would love the help getting the license.

I was just thinking about this recently in fact. At this point it is unlikely I can commit to it until July. The next 5 weeks, though June 29 for sure, are jam-packed and I can't add anything new to the schedule.
