I've always wanted my own DUKW. Rode them a lot as a kid in Wisconsin Dells.

absolutely love the old power wagons. i can't think of any practical reason for one unless i owned a huge ranch or farm but, damn, they're cool. especially the ones turned out by these guys, http://www.legacypowerwagon.com

They are very, very cool.

Dad has two of them. Two VERY nice ones.

The practical reason to own one is that they are awesome. You get to go really, really slow, be hot and cold (all at the same time!), be very uncomfortable, a little cantankerous, and get a workout driving them.

That's what's great about them. I think a Power Wagon with a Small Block, Big block, or whatever is an absolute sacrilege. We've taken all day road trips in the Power Wagons before, and by the time you go to bed, you feel like you've accomplished something.

It's like an original FJ-25 or 40, but less civilized.

EDIT--we had a friend who went to the auction. He said that the red '52 was a really, really nice job.

Wow, there's a lot of FJ40s on that list.

I love that Legacy Power Wagon site, with the "Add to Cart" option for a $129,000 vehicle.

And to think the Barret Jackson Cruisers didn't touch the $102k FJ40 at RM

One of the Chevy's would be a nice Saturday errand machine!

Sure they didn't leave Toyota that way :D I think we all agree that most left in the standard orientation but one can easily argue there are documented cases of them leaving upside down too.

You want less torque than the flathead? ;)

I kid. If I ever found a Power Wagon that was for sale with a decent body, and either no engine, or a hacked in V-8 I'd do exactly the same. A nice diesel swap wouldn't be awful in a Power Wagon, by any means. So long as it remained on the original suspension.

I agree, if there was one with a decent motor and complete i'd leave it that way.
