View Full Version : LS/NV4500 Swap or Stay Original

Last summer, I finished a 5.3 LS/Tremec 5-speed swap in my 68 camaro and am completely thrilled with the result. I'm starting to become obsessed with the notion of swapping the same engine with a NV4500 5-speed in my 78 FJ40. The vast improvement in power, MPG and MPH is very tempting. I have a friend that is an expert in building the wiring harness and is buddies with the owner of a local junkyard, which is handy for a cheap low mileage 5.3 truck engine. I have a NV4500 sitting in my shop. I realize the adaptors are not cheap and I'm thinking the overall cost will be around $3,500 ish. This would be a long term project with slowing buying parts over the next year of two.

On the other hand, keeping the 40 bone stock has an upshot for long term value and purity. I keep going back and forth with the decision. I'm looking for "what would you do" opinions and input from folks that have done similar swaps. Thanks.

Depends on if you plan on keeping the 40 or wanting to sell it someday.

Also depends on your 40. Is it a clean example or just an average truck that needs a lot of restoration to really be worth anything? My 40 is pretty much a pile at this point. So I plan to carve away.

My 40 had a SBC when I got it so I never drove it stock. But I can't imagine having only 125HP? When my 80 get retired I plan to give the 40 a rebirth with the 1FZ.

Uh, yeah. That is bitchin. By a LOT.

As for the 40, stick it in. If you were planning to sell it, you won't get a purist to buy it, but someone will, no doubt. I'd love an LS in any toyota.

I think you drive the 40 around stock and turbo the camaro. those truck motors like boost.

My friend has this same engine in his nova with a custom turbo set-up he built. He drives it to work everyday and runs low 11's on the strip. It's fast...scary fast.

Couple more pics. I bought this car when I was 13 years old and did a poor man's restoration when I was in high school...25 years ago. The car has seen several different engine combos over the years but I finally got it nailed...5.3 with Tremec 5-speed and 3.73 posi gears. No more carb issues!
