View Full Version : fog/driving lights recommendations

I have a pair of explorer pro comp 55's that are clear lens and have a spot beam pattern. I want to put these on my tundra but i don't know if they are legal for on road/highway{55 watt bulb}.I know these would be good for long range use. I would rather have a pair of fog/flood pattern with a amber or yellow lens that i could use while driving on road/highway.
Any thoughts?

I had an Amazon.com gift card so I picked up some TuffLED floods to try them out. So far I'm very impressed!

I know they will blind other drivers so I only use them on backroads, but they sure are nice and bright. (Wifey calls them "stupid bright.") The TuffLED 20" bar is next! :D

I'd wire them up and use them for dark backroads and offroad use. I'm just a sucker for illumination, though.

ya that would be cool, but i don't drive the truck offroad very much(daily driver with no backup). I work out at dia but have to take 120th on the north side to get to work and that road can be tough at times plus there is starting to be alot traffic out there and don't want to blind oncoming cars.

To be "legal" the lens probably needs a DOT stamp.

That said I had a set of Hella 500 fogs on my 40 that were not too blinding. Upgrading the stock headlight housings to an HIR bulb would be very worth while if you have not already. That cured all my complaints with my 80.

I have a set of XS900 IPF's that I use for extra high beam applications. But they are blinding.

I have the piaa bulbs for the headlights and the factory foglights, i think in the 4k to 5k range, really like them i just want a better and brighter foglight i guess is what i'm trying to say.

The law in Colorado is that you can have two fog lights and two driving lights mounted in addition to the headlights. There are also height over the deck measurements if the po-po wants to be precise but I'm not even sure a State Trooper could recite the measurement without looking it up.

I don't think there is a DOT requirement on auxiliary lighting, although there are characteristics that make them legal to use on the street or not. Like beam width and how far out and over they cover. IOW, a pencil beam is not street legal not because it lacks a DOT approval but because it reaches beyond some distance in front of your car and causes glare to oncoming traffic. Put another way, a fog light that is perfectly fine mounted and aimed normally, which is low and down, becomes potentially an infraction if you mount it on top of a roll bar and it's aimed such that it blinds oncoming traffic.

I really, really like my Piaa 6" amber drivers. Really not too expensive either.
