Anybody have any suggestions for the San Juans in the winter? What roads are open? Thinking of climbing Handies Peak if it's accessible, hoping to get to Ouray from Lake City if that's the case, but don't want to have to drive all the way around. Cinnamon Pass is pretty easy right, is it driveable in the winter? With snow chains?:D

Any ideas to spend a week hiking/snowshoeing/mountaineering down there say the second week of December?

IIRC most if not all of the 4x4 roads, trails, and passes in the area are closed for the winter. Found this site and as you will see, most of the trails are already closed (may reopen for a little while if it warms up and the snow melts):

Ron over at RMC has some pics of what the trails look like sometimes even into early summer:

If you're looking for places to stay, I know folks down there rent out their cabins and stuff. Can't remember where I found them listed but at one time I located a couple decent but very rustic cabins outside of Ouray (heading towards Silverton) that looked like great places...

Good luck and don't forget your snow shoes :D
