Great photos - thanks.

I prefer to go up Phantom Canyon and down Shelf Road. That puts you on the inside on Shelf. There can be quite a lot of inexperienced traffic especially during tourist season.

At Victor did you drive up to the Cripple Creek Victor Mining Co overlook?

It is an enormous open pit mine as opposed to the adit/shaft mining of the old days. You can see several of the old adits in the pit wall. They started down at the site of the Cresson Mine, the location of the famous "Cresson Vug":

The Cresson is named for the historic underground mining operation of the same name. The Cresson is famous for the great gold find of the District, the “Cresson Vug.” A vug is a cavity in the rock, lined with crystals somewhat like a geode. The Cresson Vug produced 60,000 troy ounces of gold that was essentially picked from the walls of a room sized void encountered about 1,200 feet below the surface in 1914.

It is well worth a look if you have not done so.

I'm in Canon City, this is in my backyard.

There are a couple of other short, interesting trips around here as well.

Not sure about camping near Cripple Creek & Victor.

At the bottom of Shelf Road there is a spot called "The Bank Campground". There is a campground. A lot of climbing opportunities there if you're into that. I believe it is BLM.

Traildamage has some info on a short trail at The Bank: http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=231

I think most of the ground along Phantom Canyon road is private. There may be some government ground along Shelf road in spots.

There are many places to camp near Cripple Creek (keep on the main road thru town and beyond past Mt pisgah) with great views most everywhere. Many "California" cabins popping up in areas, but some good dispersed camping remains. Not as many spots closer to Victor, and there is a forest service road between the 2 towns that is now gated and locked :( . Makes for a great weekend trip, stopping in town to roll the dice for a bit and explore the surrounding area while camping.
