View Full Version : Spare tire

So, I searched the collected wisdom on MUD but came up empty. Hopefully the Rising Sun can answer:
What is the largest tire that will fit on the stock spare mount of a pre-'73 passenger side carrier on a 40??
I'm finishing my lift mods and re-rubbering for Moab but I'm wondering if the 34's I ordered will fit?

I think it is more a width and weight issue rather than a hieght issue. I ran a 33x12.5" swamper out back just by adding a spacer to the carrier, really easy to do (let me know if you want more on this).
This issue for me was weight. With the older (non Tube) style carrier you will get a LOT of flex with a heavier tire, and mine started to beat the rear door to poop.
I think you will be fine, you might adjust your snubber, and put a strap on it until you see how it holds up, but I don't think you couldn't run it for its shear size.

What did you use for a spacer? Do you have pics?

Right on, I'll try a spacer. These 34's are skinnies (10.50), so hopefully it will work. I was planning on an extra strap to keep it from slamming against the door. I had a 31 on it and it was pretty close to the latch. Thanks!

As a follow-up, I mounted a Super Swamper LTB 34x10.50-15 to the stock '73 carrier - it fit fine. Narrow enough that no spacers are required, cleared the latch too. I did attach a strap to help with the extra weight.

I had a 33 x 12.5" on my stock carrier without any major problems. No spacers. I think you will be OK with a skinny 34.
My carrier was not the original from my 76. I do not know what year it came from, installed by PO. It was not the tube style.
