Does anyone have the SST for setting the pinion depth on a 40 diff? SST 09530-35010

Althought it is very nice to use. You don't have to have it. All the Toyota dealers I've worked at these are under inches of dust if they are even there at all, good luck.

You can build without it it just takes more trial and error of assembling and disassembling the diff. Little bit more time if using a solid spacer.

Fyi the shim for pinion depth is either under the large bearing race of on the pinion shaft under the actual bearing. Doesn't matter which way you do it just do one or the other not both.:thumb:

Ian,
Aftermarket gears have a suggested depth scribed on the pinion. What I do is put the stock shims back on with the large pinion bearing and set it in the housing. The suggested depth is taken from the pinion face to the centerline of the carrier. Place a small straight edge accross the carrier bearing mating surface and use a depth guage to check the depth to the pinion. This will let you know a close approximation of how much to shim or unshim to get to your beginning depth. Gears are a PITA the first few times but the more you do them the easier they are! Have fun and I'm very happy to see you doing this yourself! :thumb: :thumb:

Well I hit a wall today, the old diff had no washers in it and only one badly torn up shim. Even though the rebuild kit for Cruiser Outfitters comes with a wide variety of shims there are no washers. So I ordered up a few today. I'll have to do the trial and error process now.

Slooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow. Basically nothing has happened during ski season, I am hoping to make some progress once the snow melts though.

How goes the biz?

I was up at Copper yesterday trying to use up a 4 pass - not quite a 50 day season for me :( The conditions were ok - a bit hard packed. I finally took the cat ride up Tucker mountain. Wow, its definitely worth the hike to the top. On the way out, I noticed an FJ Trail Team tent sent up in the village. It turned out to be Woody and Chris showing off the FJC. It was cool to chat with them.

Good luck with the diffs.
