I'm still trying to figuring out the various "PO" things on my '77-40. Does this look like a CA spec Carb? I think it is, but not sure.

Currently the EGR (I think Inlet) is plugged and the hose from the big side oulet on top of the carb just runs to the inside of the engine bay - open, not plugged. Does that seem right?

Kinda hard to tell from the pictures, and I'd have to look and see what distinguishes a Fed. spec carb from a Cali spec carb. That frayed hose in your second picture (EGR inlet), on mine, held the clamp that fell into my engine...

Actually, that carb looks very similar to mine, and I'm pretty sure it's a post-'77 carb. Nakman's is much simpler.

Yeah - I went to the SOR site to look at all the pics of carbs, and it looks like a later carb, maybe 78+ CA spec? but with some stuff missing on the emissions setup, I have no clue what should be hooked up to 'what'. it's that big outlet coming from the top half of the carb that I think makes it look like the CA one.

I think I really do need to do a compare and contrast - I think I'll do that at the WIMP get together...I wanna say Rezarf has a 40 I can look at....

That big one that's just "above" the green connector in the first pic hooks up to the charcoal canister on later models, but if you have an earlier model truck it's apparently okay for it to be plugged...one of the TT articles from the stash that UB handed out a couple meetings ago talks about a pristine FJ40 a guy found in Montana and he was going through it. I'll try to find it once I get back home in a couple days...it was something about a float bowl return or something.

That's what I'm curious about - the big one above the green connector. It's got like 3ft. of hose that routes next tot he windshield washer bottle - totally open. like a drain hose would be.

AND that one that's plugged (small one in the center)...is that right? I sure don't know.

On page 31 of the Jan/Feb 1999 Trails, Ray Tolley says that the '78's float chamber is vented to the charcoal canister. He says to plug it if you don't have a '78 charcoal canister to accomodate that extra hose from the carb. I gave mine about 2 inches and capped it. So here's a bad pic of Nakman's and a couple pics of mine. Pretty sure mine's a '78, which it sounds like yours is too. I think Nakman's is closer to stock '77. Nakman's is desmogged too.
