Just got back from Australia last night. Did a little light wheeling in the Outback while I was there. We rented a 70 series camper. As if I was not already upset that Toyota does not give us a diesel in the USA. Now I'm just downright pissed.

Water crossing. They don't build many bridges in the Outback. Water just floods the road. We passed hundreds of these. The tallest one I remember was 2 meters.

Did some diving on the Great Barrier Reef. We lived on this boat for 3 nights. Got 11 dives in.

More Cruiser's. Troopie with Trailer seemed to be the locals favorite set up. 105 series or Prado with off-road caravan (camper) was very common from the city folk out on holiday.

Driving the Plenty Highway. One lane highway with two way traffic? Thats right, use the shoulder to pass oncoming traffic. Speed Limit 110 KPH (70MPH) Open range to boot. "Plenty" of cattle in the road the night before. Road Trains use this road too.

Why so long in Alice, business? 5 or 6 days is plenty to see most everything. The wheeling would be best described as expedition style. I'm sure there are some tough trails but my wife was not interested in such things on our vacation. Plus being a sole vehicle getting stuck could become dangerous.

If its hot the flies will drive you mad. Get a head net.

Take plenty of $ fuel was $1.70 per liter for diesel.

If I were to do it again I'd probably rent a 105 series for some additional comfort. The washboard gets old pretty fast.

Food was good. Service was better there than Sydney IMO.

If you have any specific questions let me know.

Most importantly "keep left"

I am curious what vehicle is that Crocodile Hunter-looks like an extended wheelbase FJ60? (pictured in #24 of this thread series)

I really did not look to close at it. It was beat the hell and just on display at the Zoo. I don't think it even had an engine under the hood anymore. Maybe it was Steve's first truck? I didn't get the story if there was one.

By this point in our trip seeing a cool Landcruiser had almost become a bore. Imagine replacing every Subaru Outback on the front range with a Troopie and every 3/4 ton truck with a 70 series cab/chassis then you might have an idea of how many were on the road.
