View Full Version : Find Treeroot an 80 thread

So, since he is looking for one, figure it deserved its own thread :D

An idea of what is being looked for:

http://denver.craigslist.org/car/334392951.html

http://www.blwilliamsllc.com/inventory/12.html

Find me this exact rig as a 95 and up and I'll buy it! Lockers, white, grey interior, cloth, lower miles, stock.......

Now, on '95 and up I'm not sure if very many, if any, came with a cloth interior and I think white usually had the tan interior but you get the idea of what is being looked for.

I'm kicking the thread off with these specimins from ebay:

'97 FZJ80, White, Tan Leather Interior, locked, stock, 46K miles (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&sspagename=ADME%3AB%3ASS%3AUS%3A1&viewitem=&item=270124534359)

'97 LX450, White, Tan Leather Interior, locked, stock, 96K miles (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&sspagename=ADME%3AB%3ASS%3AUS%3A1&viewitem=&item=320119210195) :)

Good hunting Mike :thumb:

I'm thinking this one. White, grey interior, lockers...

I am running out of storage space though so some of the other Cruisers need new homes.

Cloth looks grey but the dash/console look tan

x2 on no lockers

And this statement has me stumped: "Salvage title because of a minor incident that took off the right front flare and the right rear bumper extension." Now I know Cruiser parts are expensive comparatively but an insurance company totaled a vehicle due to the cost of a right front flare and right rear bumper extension?

NADA value as it sits today is $5750/$7200/$8200 (low/clean/high retail) so those must be some real expensive parts...

NADA value (http://www.nadaguides.com/usedcars.aspx?LI=1-21-1-5013-0-0-0&l=1&w=21&p=1&f=5014&y=1994&m=1214&d=1015&c=18&mi=172000&vi=14866&z=97232&da=-1&nx=1)

BTW, I know the seller states "Salvage or no salvage, price is firm." but dang...they are asking more $$ than NADA "clean" retail value. Guess pricing is subjective so it doesn't matter...

Beater
06-10-2007, 07:40 AM
most insurance companies will total at 50% of wholesale value, some at 40%. I know because my last one was totaled and the damage looked small. The rear of an 80 is not exactly structurally excellent. now before everyone explodes here, I am referencing the large open box aft of the axle, without cross-bracing.

If they take a side hit from the rear, at the very aft of the truck, the frame will usually be tweaked... not much, but frame jigging is expensive.

Mike,

You sure you can't live with black? This looks like a very interesting find...Saw it on MUD here --> linkie (http://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=160746)

Orange county '97 80, black, locked, GRAY CLOTH interior, 90K, $11500 (http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/car/346872700.html)

Some pics...interesting HVAC location mod...I'm thinking the seats have been redone in cloth as some of the interior bits look tan (maybe) such as the center console leather...

I think that's the stock cloth from the later 80-series years. I looked at a red 80 some years ago with the same cloth. It was so weird looking that I guessed it was aftermarket too. But now I've seen two the same, so I'm guessing that it was stock.

Got a link or more info on this mod? Is it just a lengthen of the harness? its not the best place for the controls, but it would be sweet to install a wide screen LCD into the whole length of the where the radio and HVAC stuff used to be! In car Computer = :thumb: :woot:

I would think more like $9K.

Ask him if he has done the front axle and head gasket, then shake your head and say there is $2500 worth of work right there. You don't need to do the Head gasket as PM, but you can find some threads on mud that make it look like you do. Front axle should be serviced every 50-60K miles.

I wish I had a need for that 97. If it were a 40th I'd be interested. Here's what I'm saying. There's no need to play games to get a price down. The only guys that go for that are either stupid or playing on your own stupidity. When I'm genuinely interested in something I take the opposite road by complementing the owner/vehicle. I'll point out an obvious problem, but I don't speculate on shiznit like possible HG failures.

I haven't seen that 97, but the seller seems like a guy who knows a bit more about what he has and has been on the positive side of maintenance. If you walk up to a guy like that and tell him his pride and joy needs $2,500 in maintenace and he happens to be a casual surfer of Mud who knows that boils down to about $500 in parts and elbow grease you just might receive a kick to the nuts. Am I right?

Although I'm a die-hard old-school Landcruiser fan (40's, 45's, 55's, 60's) that 80 sure would be nice with some bumpers, sliders and better rubber... Would I be upgrading from the 60? or would I be a hypocrite after all the grief I give 80 drivers for driving something so cushy... :) being able to drive the speed limit on road trips sure would be nice for a change. :D

this is the response I received from the seller,

"...I replaced an FJ-60 with the 80 and never regretted it. Despite the plushness, they are deceivingly tough and have many features that make the 80 superior to the 60 (far better traction and stability offroad or in slick conditions and able to keep up with traffic on the freeway while holding a conversation). Locking differentials alone make an incredible difference. As I mentioned in my post, we were the first to get out of our neighborhood last December and pulled any number of cars / trucks out of our unplowed street. Over Memorial Day weekend we made one last trip to the Sand Dunes and were able to handle the Medano Pass Road without reducing tire pressure. The bigs trucks struggled in spots but the Toyota handled the sand without problem (kind of made me rethink my decision to sell).

I'm sure I'm going to miss this truck, but we just don't get to hills much anymore so we're opting for efficiency (VW TDI).

Let me know if you have specific questions.

Cheers,

John"

No you are wrong. If he has done the work great, if he hasn't and will redo the front axle great. However, if he hasn't done the front axle and Mike buys it then Mike will have to do the front axle to baseline the vehicle. If he is a caseual surfer of mud he will know this is true.

Assuming he has done all that I still think $9K is a fair price for that rig with that many miles. I bought a 96 with a little more miles, the HG done, front axle done, Fuel injectors cleaned and lots of other maintenace for $8K without lockers. I put a rear locker in for about $650 and am waiting for a front locker. I didn't play games. I test drove it, found a problem and the seller fixed it as part of the deal. Not to bring it up would have been stupid on my part.

There is nothing wrong with discussing the maintenance you have to do to baseline a truck during negotiations. Not to do that would be stupid. That's not a game that's facts. I could say more, but the tone of your post has pissed me off and I better check my temper.

No Reason to bet.

Chad and I have different approaches to negotiating. I feel you should point out the things that you will need to do or fix as part of the total negotiation. I have no problem that he has a different approach I just took exception that he used the words gaming and stupid when describing my approach. I was not suggesting he make things up and blow smoke up the sellers ass. It's the beginning of a discussion that leads to a mutually agreeable baseline.

The headgasket is a reasonable thing to ask about and consider in the price. You don't need to do it as PM, but I and a lot of others did. You also don't want it to blow on you on Cliffhanger. Having the headgasket done is a big plus and one the reasons I went for Ben's truck so I wouldn't have to worry about it.

I think it is possible that Chad interpreted that I would only say bad things and exaggerate to get the price down (Not speaking for Chad). I would not do that. On the other hand, I wouldn't walk into a negotiation saying its perfect and exactly what I want and I have to have it either.

Treeroot's head must be a spinning :D with so many choices!!

I'd definitely check Carfax and Autocheck (or whatever it is) on the TX truck. Maybe the decal just rubbed off but along with that 40th emblem on the front fenders there should be a sticker. So the fenders have either been fixed/resprayed/replaced or the stickers came off. Looks like a nice clean rig otherwise.

It's crazy how many locked 80s are popping up in the last couple months. I count 13 93-97 including three LX450s in the last 60 days. There's prolly more as I haven't been paying much attention lately. Sometimes I wonder if that 7% locked figure is correct, but then I don't really count how many unlocked 80s I see so who knows? If you're looking for a locked 80 and can't find one there's gotta be something wrong.

hahaha back off, that might be mine....but yea for real, it's a 95 so it has airbags which was a must for me. Anyway, I should know in the morning if this will be in the driveway....I am really after it because it's the color I liked the most.

I'm late to this game. I was off the computer all of June except for my classes, then Rubithon, now I have some down time.

The only color combo you will find with cloth and lockers is tan. The beige metallic wouldn't go with grey leather so they did make some of these fully loaded for the US. Of Course Toyota is full of flukes. A few weeks ago I looked at a 2/90 80 series that had a nice factory velour and the console ice maker. It was a factory US rig. No flares and steel wheels. It was the silver/red combo like Robbies. Another odd thing is that it had a bright red hazard button. I looked at a 5/90 that had the same bright red hazard button but with flares. It had the tweed seats used in the 91/92s. Idaho has a lot of freaks as our dealer traded Celicas for Cruisers to other dealers. We have a lot of tropical spec trucks running around. No sliding windows in the rear, sunroofs, or rear heat. No roofracks or CD either. I've seen these as late as 1995 models.

The pictures on page two are of the 95-97 cloth. Most of these do not have 3rd seats which isn't a huge deal as most 3rd row seats sit in garage corners, basements, or attics. I've seen a few of these rigs over the years. Never a 97 but quite a few 95-96s. Blue, Grey and White never any other colors. I saw a blue one in Scum Valley, Idaho that was blue, no rear seats, with factory lockers. The guy claimed to have ordered it this way. To my knowledge there were no custom order 80s.

Post 95 most of the white trucks I've looked at had the Oak leather instead of the grey. Maybe it all of them? I'm not sure.

I've actually thought of selling mine. It is real rare bird. 94 white, grey cloth in near perfect condition, with factory lockers and 4.56s. I retrofitted the elockers. The problem I have with selling mine is that is scratched and has a few dings in the rear quarter and has 223k on it. It isn't worth enough for me to get something else. I'd like to build and expedition prepped 100. But honestly I can't afford it even with selling our 80. It gets tough when you have something that is pretty darn nice for road trips and wheeling and it is paid for.

http://www.cars.com/go/search/search_results.jsp?tracktype=usedcc&searchType=21&cid=&dlid=&dgid=&amid=&cname=&mdnm=Land+Cruiser&mknm=Toyota&rd=100&zc=83706&makeid=47&modelid=428&pageNumber=0&numResultsPerPage=50&largeNumResultsPerPage=0&sortorder=descending&sortfield=PRICE+descending&certifiedOnly=false&criteria=K-%7CE-%7CM-_47_%7CD-_428_%7CN-N%7CR-100%7CI-1%7CP-PRICE+descending%7CQ-descending%7CZ-83706&aff=idstates&aff=idstates

is what we have now. It looks like this CK Auto Sales in Nampa is dabbling in Cruisers. They have 2 80s and a 62.

Not at all....heck $15k would be a great price for that Cruiser! LX's would be around 7500 - 8000 for the same model! :hill:

If you do it then Jim's plate suggestion will fit! :Princess:

geighty? Only 40th anniversary sage can be considered ghey :p:. (not that there is anything wrong with that)

Unique is not ghey...but a 45 guy suddenly coming out of the closet showing that he has been secretly admiring big and brawny boy toys definitely has signs of limp wrist!
Being blown is a good thing but Cruising around with your access open is pretty Ghey!
