View Full Version : Tie Downs

I was looking to install some some additional tie downs in my 4Runner. I remember back in the day, on my '86 SR5 4Runner it had built-in tie-downs in the rear bed. Does anyone have these in their 4Runner? Can someone photograph the tie-down above and below, so I can see how they are attached? I like how Bill replaced the plastic side panels in the rear with plywood and carpeting. Very cool.

80 tie downs have 2 bolts, Runners have only one.. :D But I suspect that a guy like Oleg would have both kicking around somewhere... ?

My 89 4runner boasts 4 orignal seperate tie downs (and 0 cup holders.). They are D ring shapped and lay mostly flat. 1 in ear rear corner and 1 on each inside of the wheel well.
I think there are 2 captive nuts welded to a single backing plate under each hook.
I'll go try to get pics.

Actually, the stock tiedowns are just OK for light items, and are not particularly conveniently placed. If you tie down a tire though, be advised your tire may demonstrate aerodynamic qualities in a crash if you just use the stock tie downs. If you are still around to care, you will have new drain holes in the floor where the tie downs used to be.
Far better would be to weld a captive nut to some fairly size-ish 3/16" plate or thick large washers, then attach same to the floor via welding or epoxy to just hold it conveniently in place. Then put 'em wherever you want.
Will tack weld for pizza. You purchase, cut, drill and fasten.
