View Full Version : Recycle your radiators

Hearing about stolen copper wiring and copper prices, I called two recycling shops and asked about old all-brass vehicle radiators (like FJ40/55/60 stuff).

One shop told me that if I stripped the radiator (removed the steel frame, so that what they got was all brass), they'd give me $1.25 per radiator.

I called another shop, and they said a stripped radiator was worth $1.00 per *pound*. So, my buddy Rob Grimes took his stash of leaky FJ radiators down there after removing the steel and walked out with $100. I also asked about aluminum cans, and while King Soopers gives you 0.20/lb, they will give .50/lb.

So, if you have a bunch of skanky old Land Cruiser radiators, don't toss them. You can also use this 'found money' to keep the TLCA mailing list alive, or some other charitable cause.

Plastic/Aluminum radiators aren't of much interest to scrap joints, FWIW.

So the brass is just the core?

Core and tanks, minus any steel frames around the radiator. The shop that offered $1/lb was in Colo Springs. Call around as prices vary day by day.

In the past, I never would have called a recycling joint for a radiator - I just chucked them.
