Got this from a friend and apparently is checks out as being real...

I guess it isn't all that new (Snopes states since '05) but I don't recall hearing this one before so I figure I would pass it on...

JURY DUTY SCAM: This has been verified by the FBI (their link is also
included below). Please pass this on to everyone in your email address
book. It is spreading fast, so be prepared should you get this
call. Most of us take summons for jury duty seriously, but enough people
skip out on their civic duty that a new and ominous kind of scam has
surfaced. The caller claims to be a jury coordinator. If you protest
that you never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your
Social Security number and date of birth, so he or she can verify the
information and cancel the arrest warrant. Give out any of this information and
bingo; your identity just got stolen.

The scam has been reported so far in 11 states, including Oklahoma, Illinois,
and Colorado. This (scam) is particularly insidious because they use
intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into giving information by
pretending they're with the court system. The FBI and the federal court system
have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites, warning consumers about the
fraud. Check it out here:

No offence Jeff but please don't post chain letters on the forum. There is more than enough of them everyday in my (our) in-boxes.

Thanks!

Maybe Wes can just delete the thread? Or I guess I could, but what is the fun in that :D

Ok I'm disagreeing. thanks for the warning Jeff, I hadn't seen this one before.

I'd rather glance at something here than get another email, what's so wrong with a recurring thread about fraud, phishing, etc? Would fit right in with the Humor thread and Craigslist thread.. both are easily ignored if you don't care or already know everything.

I found it of value too - as long as you check it for validity (as opposed to what my sister does :blah: ) which you did.

Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys.

When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback, so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back.

It was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow coloring and sold it to people to use in place of butter.

How do you like it? (They have come out with some clever new flavorings.)

DO YOU KNOW...the difference between margarine and butter?

Read on to the end...gets very interesting!

Both have the same amount of calories. Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams compared to 5 grams.

Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study.

Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods.

Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few only because they are added!

Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavors of other foods.

Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years.

And now, for margarine...

Very high in trans fatty acids.

Triple risk of coronary heart disease.

Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol) and lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good
cholesterol)

Increases the risk of cancers up to five fold.

Lowers quality of breast milk.

Decreases immune response.

Decreases insulin response.

And here's the most disturbing (and interesting) fact....

Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC!

This fact alone was enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance).

You can try this yourself:

Purchase a tub of margarine and leave it in your garage or shaded area.

Within a couple of days you will note a couple of things:

No flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something!).

It does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value.

Nothing will grow on it. Even those teeny weenie microorganisms will not find a home to grow.

Why? Because it is nearly plastic.

Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?

Share This With Your Friends..... (If you want to "butter them up")!

Chinese Proverb:

When someone shares something of value with you and you benefit from it, you have a moral obligation to share it with others."

And so it begins...I'm thinking we need to have Wes (or someone with the powah') edit the title and call this thread the "Frauds, Phishing, Warnings, and Chain Letters" :D

Credit goes to Tim for thinking up that idea :)

Here you go.. not sure how valid all this is, but it can't hurt. How to pump gas:

TIPS ON PUMPING GAS--GOOD INFO
I don't know what you guys are paying for gasoline....Here in California we are also paying higher, up to $3.50 per gallon. But my line of work is in petroleum for about 31 years now, so here are some tricks to get more of your money's worth for every gallon.

Here at the Kinder Morgan Pipeline where I work in San Jose, CA we deliver about 4 million gallons in a 24-hour period thru the pipeline. One day is diesel the next day is jet fuel, and gasoline, regular and premium grades. We have 34-storage tanks here with a total capacity of 16,800,000 gallons.
Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground the more dense the gasoline, when it gets warmer gasoline expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening.... your gallon is not exactly a gallon. In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products plays an important role. A 1-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps.
When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to a fast mode. If you look you will see that the trigger has three (3) stages: low, middle, and high. In slow mode you should be pumping on low speed, thereby minimizing the vapors that are created while you are pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapor return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some of the liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapor. Those vapors are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you're getting less worth for your money.

One of the most important tips is to fill up when your gas tank is HALF FULL or HALF EMPTY. The reason for this is, the more gas you have in your tank the less air occupying its empty space. Gasoline evaporates faster than you can imagine. Gasoline storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the gas and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation. Unlike service stations, here where I work, every truck that we load is temperature compensated so that every gallon is actually the exact amount.

Another reminder. If there is a gasoline truck pumping into the storage tanks when you stop to buy gas, DO NOT fill up -- most likely the gasoline is being stirred up as the gas is being delivered, and you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom.

Hope this will help you get the most value for your money.

FROM THE MANAGER CREDIT & FOREIGN BILLS.
FIRST NATIONAL BANK SOUTH AFRICA
JOHANNESBURG,

Tel : 0027 738 233 262
Email: jacobsisulu10@yahoo.com

ATTENTION: Sir/Madam,
My name is Dr Jacob Sisulu the Manager, Credit and Foreign bills of FIRST NATIONAL BANK SOUTH AFRICA. I am writing in respect of a foreign customer of our bank whose name is Mr.Andreas Schranner, a German property magnate who lost his life on Monday 31st of July 2000, along with his wife, Maria and their children and even grand children in a plane crash, the AF4590 Crash including all 109 people on board and five who died on the ground when the Plane crashed into the Hotelissimo and till now the account remains dormant.

Refer to the website below for more details:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/859479.stm

Since the demise of this customer, I personally have watched with keen interest to see the next of kin to this customer, but all has proved abortive as no one has come to claim his funds of US$36.5M (Thirty Six Million Five Hundred Thousand United States Dollars) which has been with our branch for a very long time. On this note, I decided to seek for whom his name shall be used as the Next of Kin as no one has come up as his next of kin. And the banking ethics here does not allow such money to stay more than Ten years, because the money will be recalled to the bank treasury as unclaimed fund after this period. In view of this I got your contact through a trade journal when I was making a research on a foreigner I will use in this great opportunity. For your assistant I and my colleague are willing to give you 20% of the total amount.

Upon the receipt of your response, I will send you by fax the letter of application which you will re-type sign and send back to our bank to enable us start the processing of this claim. I will not fail to bring to your notice that this business is hitch free and that you should not entertain any fear as all modalities for the smooth and easy transfer of this fund has been finalized, this transaction will be completed within five banking days of receiving your response, after you apply to the bank as a relation to the deceased I will use my position to fasten the release and transfer of this customers money to you as the next of kin.

When you receive this letter. Kindly call me in signifying your decision. Please include your private Tel/Fax numbers for quick communication.

Yours Sincerely,

Dr.Jacob Sisulu.

Dear Sir / Madam,

I am Mr.Azzam Mahmud, Chairman of the Tender Committee in an oil company.
My Committee is principally concerned with payment of all contract awarded
from 2004 to date, in order of priority as regard capital projects of our
corporation.

I am positive and convinced that you would provide us with solution to a
money transfer deal valued at US$13 Million (Thirteen Million United
States Dollars) and subsequently a joint business venture. I will need
bank account in your country or offshore account.

I would like to invest the money in manufacturing of products. If you have
any other idea of investment, that would be welcomed by me. The money will
be bank-to-bank transfer with out any risk involved.

In the course of our duties as values, and project inspectors for the
on-going liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) project, we have over-invoiced the
value of some jobs done by foreign contractors to the tune of
US$13Million.

As follows: -
(1) Computer optimization and Installation 4,000.000.00.
(2) Installation of 250,000.00 Monax Turbine$6,000.000.00
(3) Turn around Maintenance $3,000,000.00

The money will be shared as follows after transfer, 30% for you 70% for me.
I know exactly how to present you / your company as the Beneficiary of the
funds. The transfer is bank-to-bank, there is no risk involved.

Yours Faithfully,
Mr.Azzam Mahmud.

A response I received earlier about CL add for a Cruiser posted in Denver, Houston and Las Vegas. Note item #3 below, where he will ship "the Jeep"

-----------------------
Hello, my name is Robert Delavil and 2 weeks ago I moved to London United Knigdom with my job.The car is located in Florida in a port under a shipping company custody ready to be shipped here in London . but I decided to sell it in US because it will cost me verry much to shipp it here plus I cannot register here because is an old model with US specs plus I need money cash as soon so I can buy another car here, the car is in perfect condition, but is an verry beatifull car and the engine is in perfect working condition, you can see more photos with the car at this link:

1977 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 ............3200$
Miles: 74000 Transmission: Manual Interior: Gray
Engine: 6 - Cyl. Year: 1977
Title: Clear Exterior: Yellow
Shipping will be done with DAS insured and will take 3 days to reach your address. I will handle all shipping fees anywhere in US (they are included in the price )
So if you decide on buying the car, I want the deal closed only through WorldPay safe purchase program(this is an verry trusted program for online purchases), so both can be protected by WorldPay, let me explain you how the Worldpay process works.
The process works something like this:
1. You send the payment deposit to an WorldPay representative.
2. Worldpay will confirm me that you have made the deposit.
3. I will ship the Jeep so you can Inspect, test and make a decision if you will keep it or not.
4. If you will not get exactly the same car that you have viewed in the ad, and also a clean title you will receive all your money back from WorldPay.
5. If everything is ok Worldpay will get the approval from you to release me the funds.
If you agree with this process please let me know and I will forward the details to Worldpay, this is the safest method that is, you will receive more information from them by email after I will have your full name and shipping address
I think that this is a fair way to make business and I hope that you will agree. I don't touch your money until you receive and inspect the car.
Hoping that I have kept your attention and your interest is still on

With consumers finally getting wise to phishing attacks, scammers are hitting the phones. The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) warned Thursday that so-called "vishing" attacks are on the rise. These are scams where criminals send an e-mail or text message to a victim, saying there has been a security problem and the victim needs to call his or her bank to reactivate a credit or debit card". Upon calling the telephone number, the recipient is greeted with 'Welcome to the bank of ...' and then [is] requested to enter their card number in order to resolve a pending security issue," the IC3 said in its alert. In the past few years, inexpensive VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) technology and open-source call-center software has made it inexpensive for scammers to set up phony call centers, paving the way for these new types of scams. Security experts say that vishing can be more effective than traditional phishing techniques -- which direct victims to fake Web sites -- because the voice-based attacks have not been as widely publicized. A new vishing scam involves sending text messages to cell phones, instructing victims to contact the fake online bank to renew their accounts, the IC3 said. Those who are unsure whether they have been targeted by this scam should look up the bank's phone number and call the bank directly, the IC3 advises. (Computerworld 01/18/08)

Good day,

I know you will be surprised to read this mail from me, but please consider this letter as a genuine request from a family in dire need of your humble assistance. Firstly, I must introduce myself. I am David Nkomo. A Citizen of Zimbabwe, but I am contacting you from Accra Ghana where I am now seeking political asylum. I got your contact from a business Directory in Accra Ghana chambers of commerce and industry information exchange online.

I am the son of Mr. Sameul Nkomo, a wealthy farmer and senior politician with the opposition political party in my country, Movement for Democratic Change (MDC). Our wicked President Robert Mugabe murdered my father, before I ran away from my country because I have become his next target to eliminate.

My father was a fighter for Justice and a moving force in The MDC, a party wanting to end the several years of brutal Dictatorship government of President Robert Mugabe. You will read more stories about President Mugabe's brutal acts by visiting this web site:
http://www.rte.ie/news/2000/0418/zimbabwe.html

My father was accused of assisting the White farmers in fighting the government. Few weeks after his arrest, he was reported dead. The government claimed he died of heart attack and his body was never seen for proper autopsy, they buried him in the government cemetery. My father's associate Mr. Martin Olds a White farmer from Britain assisted me in fighting my father's death through the Court and media.

The Government saw us as a big treat to them and decided to eliminate us. Mr. Olds was attacked and murdered in his House, but fortunately, before they came looking for me, I received the news and I left the country through the border to Accra Ghana to save my life, Before my arrival here in Accra Ghana Here is my reason for contacting you.

My father deposited a huge Sum of money in the total sum of US$20.5M [Twenty million, Five hundred thousand United States Dollars] ESCROW CALL ACCOUNT with one of the Bank in Accra Ghana, my father kept this money for investment pending when the foreign partner will apply for it, and the bank is now asking for the foreign investors account which the money will be transfer into, that is the instruction my father give to the bank as if he knew that his going to die.

The government seized my fathers farms and banks account before his arrest and Murder. He told me everything concerning the funds while he was still in detention. This is why I need your assistance in securing the funds there in your Country, so that I can arrange on how to come over to your country for the investment of the fund, I am willing to offer you 30% of the US$20.5 Million For your assistance to provide an account where the funds will be transferred into, While 5% will be set aside for any expenses that may occur during the transaction.

And the remaining 65% is for me and my mother for the investment, please; let me know if you can assist me, so that I can give you more details on how we shall proceed. As I wait for your urgent Response, please treat this information as top secret and very confidential.
Please don't border to reply if you can not assist.

Yours truly,

David Nkomo.

....just what I need....another female in my life....at least this one will make me rich!

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Dearest One,

Good a thing to write you. I have a proposal for you-this however is not mandatory nor will I in any manner compel you to honour against your will. I am Tutu,21years old and the only daughter of my late parents Mr.and Mrs Kone Coulibally. My father was a highly reputable busnness magnet-(a cocoa merchant)who operated in the capital of Ivory coast during his days. It is sad to say that he passed away mysteriously in France during one of his business trips abroad on 12th.Febuary 2005.

Though his sudden death was linked or rather suspected to have been masterminded by an uncle of his who travelled with him at that time. But God knows the truth! My mother died when I was just 4 years old,and since then my father took me so special. Before his death on Febuary 12 2005 on our to the hospital and he disclosed to me secretly that he has the sum of Sixteen million, seven hundred thousand United State Dollars.
(USD$16.700,000) left in fixed deposit account in one of the leading banks in Abidjan Cote d ivoire Africa .

I am just 21 years old and really don't know what to do.Now I want an account overseas where I can transfer this funds. This is because I have suffered a lot of set backs as a result of incessant political crisis here in Ivory coast. The death of my father actually has brought sorrow to my life.

I am in a sincere desire of your humble assistance in this regards.Your suggestions and ideas will be highly regarded. Now permit me to ask these few questions:-

1. Can you honestly help me as your daughter?

2. Can I completely trust you?
3. What percentage of the total amount in question will be good for you after the money is in your account?

Please,Consider this and get back to me as soon as possible.
Thank you so much.

My sincere regards,
Tutu Coulibally.

If someone comes to your front door saying they are checking for ticks due to the Spring weather and asks you to take your clothes off and spin around with your arms up.....

DO NOT DO IT!! THIS IS A SCAM!!

They only want to see you naked.

I wish I'd gotten this yesterday. I feel so stupid.

Got this in my email today...

Not really new but a reminder, especially with the upcoming holiday season when you might be more "willing" to open an email attachment like this...

Apparently, the Feds have sent warnings to some of their employees about a new computer virus that is making rounds (you know if the Feds' IT folks are worried, it has to be serious...........I also checked it on Snopes and UPS; it is NOT a hoax; it's for real).

If it's important enough for Federal officials to warn their employees, it's important enough for me to warn you...........

Do NOT open any e mails purporting to come from UPS or FedEX regarding a delivery you sent. Delete the e mails IMMEDIATELY.

Here's a link to a UPS warning about the e mails:

I've heard bad things about PayPal but they've always come through for me. Even when I bought some parts from eBay AU for my cruiser when the seller stiffed me. They refunded everything the seller had in his account and said that's all they could recover. A month later I saw him selling more stuff and told PayPal he must have more in his account. He did and they got the rest of my money back. Can't complain about that kind of follow-up.

My experience was the complete opposite...I got stiffed on an Ebay item that I paid for via PayPal. This was one item out of a larger order paid for at one time. I had an email from the seller stating that they had in FACT failed to send the item and didn't have it to send and that they would refund me my $$. They never did so I disputed the charges with PayPal. PayPal would graciously refund me the $$ as long as I provided proof that I had returned the item. WTF? How do you return and item you never received. Let's just say after 2 months of fighting with them I finally just disputed the ENTIRE charge through my CC company and got resolution that way :D

Beware of closeoutgenius.com. They have associated sites like navigenius.com, cellulargenius.com, camcordergenius.com and bigcameradeals.com. The navi site looks legitimate but their sales practices are sleazey bordering on illegal. Do a Google search for comments before ordering anything from these schucks. I made the mistake of placing an order but was able to cancel it before any payment was made. What's odd is that some of the online sites like Nextag give them a decent rating. I'm done ordering anything online without first doing some digging into who I'm ordering from.

This one arrived in the Treasurer's email box, along with a couple from Mr. Yang in Hong Kong and some company wanting trying to find diamond distributors ...There was even a picture attached...I just had to laugh :lmao:. And yes, it was all run together just like this :hill:

Hello. My name is Olga. I understand that you don't know me, and I don't know you, but in the future all can change probably. I ask that you have given me some minutes on perusals of my letter. I hope that it will not make difficulty to you. Marriage agency in Kanash gave me your e-mail address. To me explained that you very good person and you very much approach to me. I have come to Agency to find the future husband from other country. Why from another country? Because I have been very much disappointed with Men from my country and now I search my life in abroad. I has tired to be lonely and to carry spend all days equally. I want to love and to be happy! I asked myself a question why I can not it. And I come in this agency with such the request that they have helped me to find the person for that I will happy. Yes certainly I have paid some money that has found the person for me. But what is it the money in comparison with love? Nothing. It is simply emptiness. Love is the most important feeling in a life, without which our lives grey and empty. I shall not speak how many I have paid. I hope that you will understand me. I very much hope that you will be interested in me and we can continue our dialogue after that letters. And I very much hope that I shall leave in yours opinion good Impression about me. I want to tell some words about me. As I already spoke my name is Olga I'm 26 years. I live in Kanash. You can look my external qualities in my photo which I have attached in the letter. I live with my mum together and I work as doctor the Dentist and I treat a teeth to people. I have gone studies on this profession, in order to help people. I look like on my father because he gave your life to rescue the little girl, and he has rescued her only he lost. I shall tell you about it later. I love my professional though In Russia it is not as well appreciated as in other foreign countries. I love an active way of life but time not suffices. In my life I dream to find the person with which I can to lead all life and I shall be happy. I dream about big and cheerful, friendly family. I don't search ideal man. The main thing that in him there were high qualities as skill to love, to respect, to appreciate relations, to love children and is skilful to love and make the happy partner. For me the age does not matter because the love has not limit. I very much hope that you will write to me and will tell about yourself. I am already lonely very long time. I had earlier shot relations but it was failed. I very much hope that you become my unique person in my life. So let's not lose time. I ask you that you have answered my letter and then we can learn each other better. I hope that I have liked to you. If serious relations aren't interesting to you or I am not pleasant to you, say me it please. Is it well?

I very much ask that you have answered to me only to e-mail Marriage Agency: lovolya@yahoo.com

I shall wait from you the letter with the big impatience!
Bye bye!
Tired from loneliness Olga

I believe that's one of the unwritten perks of being the RS treasurer Jeff. All those hours laboring over the checking accounts, balances and distribution of funds finally pays off. :lmao:

This is your money I don't think having to wait 3-9 days is acceptable. Also when you contact them let them know they have the comma in the wrong place on the dollar amount. (funny coming from me the guy who can never figure out the proper usage of commas) What type of people are they hiring down at the IRS that don't know this? Some times I just don't know what this country is coming to. :D

Found out today that a buddy on mine at work, his son fell for one of those internet dating scams

Something along the lines where you get contacted, supposedly, by a really good looking woman that convinces you that you and her are meant for each other. The only problem is that she is in Florida or Bermuda or wherever, and can't afford the airfare to fly to Colorado to meet you. BUT, if you send her money for the airfare she'll fly out. Seriously?

Well, this young dumbass sells his car to get the money and sends it to "her", only to get a follow up email later that now she is stuck in {insert a state} and needs more money to get the rest of the way to Colorado. It is at this point where my buddy's son asks his dad for money and tells his dad what he has done and that he had sold his car... Amazing!

I had heard of the scam before from a buddy that was on some online dating website and sent me some pictures he received for a "lady" that had contacted him and was interested in meeting him...I can't remember where this supposed person was from but "she" wanted him to send her airfare money to fly out :lmao:

I told him to find someone that lived closer, like Westminster or Aurora :hill: - The pictures by the way weren't the type that most respectable women would send to a prospective person they might be interested in a long term relationship with :D

I'm just amazed that I know someone (in a round about way) that has actually fallen for this scam. I bet the young bucks money is now sitting in an account under the first name of Bruno or something :) - On top of all that, the son asked my buddy if he could borrow his car now...

An aide that works for my wife got scammed on Ebay. She bought a car (clue1 - price was too good to be true ). Everything was on the normal until it was time to send payment. Seller offered free shipping if she was willing to wait as supposedly the sellers uncle owned a transport business and he would haul the car up when he made his regular trip to Colorado every 3rd week. (clue 2) The seller insisted on 100% payment immediately because he had financial issues, which is why he had to sell the car in the first place. (huge clue!) She wired him $3500 via Western Union. (really dumb move!!!!!!!) The seller continued to communicate after the transfer for a couple days and told her transport was arraigned in two weeks. Communication stopped, car never showed up, Ebay could not do anything because the seller was protected by international laws and the time line for dispute expired.

I feel sad for the girl but it's really hard to understand how someone could fall for this kind of thing. She was devastated. She had been so excited to get this cool car for the money she had. She was excited to impress others by the great deal. These scams happen more than I think we realize. The girl is very bright and she did think she was dealing with a person only a couple states away. Scary stuff! Bonus scary is the seller now has the lady's address and other info!

Happened to me despite doing my best due diligence...Fortunately I was only out a deposit...I may have mentioned this before

In my case, the "seller" was auctioning off items from an estate...Problem was, he wasn't the estate owner but rather just a guy that the estate owner, who passed away, had been helping out by letting this guy live rent free in his home in NH as I recall. The guy would sell items several times over like a tractor and including the FJ40 I was buying. I actually spoke with 2 of the other buyers of the FJ40, one of which actually ended up with the vehicle before the police came to recover it. I never recouped any money despite the guy getting arrested and going to court.

Now my motto is on big ticket purchases that if I can't touch it in person, I don't buy it.
