View Full Version : Small fog/driving lights - recommendations?

So...my new bumper on the 40 won't allow me to reuse the existing offroad lights...

I need to find some offroad lights are are fairly short, around 6" or less from bottom of mount that will sit on the top of the bumper to the top of the light. Even Hella 500 are just a tad too high.

Anyone have a recommendation for a good offroad light that would fit? I've looked at tons of lights online but before I go ordering some I thought I would check to what, if any, lights you all might suggest. My other option would be to fab a bracket that would come off the bumper and back a little to bolt the existing lights to but I suck as fabrication and would prefer to switch to round lights from the rectangular ones I have...

Here is what the lights I have look like and a before shot of the old bumper, winch, etc....

No help with the lights, sorry.. but is that a floaty thing for the winch cable?

Wes' 40 has the Uber-cool OEM fog lamps on it, maybe he'll post a pic.

I guess it floats, not sure :hill:

It's one of those winch saver dealyo's that looks like a rubber life saver and IIRC its primary purpose to put tension on the cable to keep the hook snug. Secondary purpose is to put weight on the cable in case it breaks during use. Tried to use one on the LX but it looked silly with the synthetic rope and Hawse fairlead but it works good on the 40 with the roller fairlead and cable :thumb:. Of course the 40 now has the 8274 Warn on it and the XD9000 in the picture is on the LX.

I have the Hella 550's on my 60 (amber fog, rectangular). For about $70 for the whole kit it's a darn good deal. As you know, they have fog and driving beams. I do like the wide/flat fog beam; it's a nice compliment to the IPF headlights. :D I notice you want to go to round. I think IPF has the "RV" line of lights that are a tad smaller like 5', maybe?

Oh, and I've had those 550's literally for over 15years and only changed one bulb.

Thanks for the suggestions Shawn...Yeah, I think round will look better on the setup I have. I was about to go buy a set of the Hella 500s you have on your 40 and then I decided I should measure first. I have about 6" from the top of the bumper to where the "bow" that goes up and over to the other side (think bull bar look I guess) runs above the bolt hole. And, since the tube part comes down at the ends I loose height gradually as the tube comes down. I'm thinking a 5" light max.

I need to check with the manufacturer though as there aren't any true mounting tabs on the bumper itself () so I would be replacing 1 of the 5 bumper mounting bolts on each side and mounting the light in that hole. I would think 4 bolts per side for the bumper would still be plenty strength wise.

In the end I may have to break down and have someone weld on some light tabs to the bumper itself but I'm not sure how that will look.

Hmmm...Not near as bad as I figured. I'll have to convince Jerry that I really am part of Rising Sun first though :hill:

Did they come with a relay and wiring harness etc. or just the lights? Did you mount them on some brackets to set them higher and do you recall what the dimensions are?

TIA

no relays or wiring.. just the lights. Brackets are OEM from Japan. We can't get them here and ownes export hand carried the last ones he could get in Japan. I don't think you necessarly need those though.

Dimensions of the light? I dunno 6-8 inches maybe..

Probably more like a 1/3 :D

But, if they are truly 6+" tall that is too high for my application :(

buy some h4's upgrade the harness and scrape fog lights all together. How often you drive that thing at night or in the fog anyway.

Mine are oem just for show. They are not hooked up :hill:

Ummm...well....ahhhhh...yeah :o

Since my 40 hasn't seen the road in several months now what I put on there will be mostly for show as well...I'd like lights that will work well if ever needed but I am not going to spend silly $$ on them. The Hella 500s would be perfect as they are pretty dang cheap, just too dang tall .

Took seven years but.... I finally found a set that I believe to be OEM. The internals changed from a screw for bulb access to a rubber grommet so there may be differences in years. The bulb in these are Koito and the internals are the grommet style.

CDan said he couldn't get them but others say Beno can for $80 each but no brackets. I believe they are available in foreign markets so maybe that is the difference. I picked up a set of the SOR reproductions as well so I could compare.

what's The Sor Repops Like To Oem?

By weight alone, the OEM ones are a better quality. I do have to say the reproductions are not far off though.
