View Full Version : Octane vs Timing vs Altitude

Any suggestions on timing a 3.0 auto? Versus the octane to run out here at about 7000-8000' I live at 7800 but work at 6200'. obviously up hill on the way home, so I would rather have the power there.

I ask only because I just changed my sea level plugs out and half were covered in ash build up (haynes manual reference).

I currently run about 15 degrees advanced. does not ping. I am however, headed to west Virginia on Wednesday, So I may have to tweak it back for the trip.

Just looking to prolong the life of the 3.0, thanks for any insight.

Generally speaking, I have run regular in my 3.0s always. Advanced the timing shy of ping with no issues. But, when going to sea level, around mid Kansas I usually found ping beginning to happen, and by the time I got to Kentucky it was retard the timing or run av gas!!
