Decided to start a Ptarmigan mods thread to document a few things I am doing to the Ptarmigan.

To start, I picked up a 1995 FZJ80 - 171,000 miles, lockers...

1st mod was the OEM no print gas cap - thanks to Kevin, Jerry, and Boulder Toyota
2nd mod was to modify the temp gauge to read the temp instead of just being an idiot light - thank you for the diode and resister Kevin
http://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=64252
3rd mod was to make the gauges a little more sporty!! :D - whitegauges.net

Mike I heard if you pull the dash panel you can snip the little metal flanges that block all the light from getting to the cluster and get LOTS OF LIGHT OUT THEM!...

...oops, I forgot you got a fancy new rig. :D

Seriously though, very cool gauges, looking forward to see what you do with this build!

So does the temp. gauge thingy just change the resolution? I don't get it...

The hardest part of the mod is pulling and reinstalling the cluster without dropping the steering column and related dissasembly. When I did mine I ordered 12 resistors of both flavors needed as the shipping was the same for 24 as it was for 2. I got your back 80/450 dudes! ;)

OK, so 'splain what's up with the temperature gauge.
Is it like mine, where it goes from 'cold' to 'middle of the range' about the time I back out of the garage, in 2.4 milliseconds? Is that what you fixed?

treerootCO
11-12-2007, 11:43 AM
Correct. The stock gauge reads off, on, and boiling. Now it reads like a temp gauge should.

Those gauges look sweet. What other colors do they have?

That temp gauge mod sounds like a good one. Maybe I could do my D light at the same time.

I've seen this mod before and I'm not sure how it works out on mini trucks. Sounds like yours is definitely a similar operation. My gauge takes a few minutes to go from cold to operate. Starting in the morning it doesn't hit the middle of the sweep until I'm just about at the highway, so from Downing and Evans, north on Downing about 6 blocks and it'll just about be there by the time I hit the on-ramp. My guess is that the combo gauges we have are the same circuit as the Cruiser. Our dead spot is 135 ohms, the lower side is below 57 ohms and the boil-over is above 217 ohms. I wouldn't be surprised to find the exact same nulling diode-limited Wheatstone (or half Wheatstone anyway).

Edit: Ran out at lunch and watched my temp closer. Yup, seems it comes up slowly to about 25% of the sweep and pops right up to a needle's width on the low side of middle. I'd guess there's a pretty wide dead spot on the middle of my gauge. Guess I'll be tearing my dash apart!

DaveInDenver
11-12-2007, 12:22 PM
We could have tried it on your gauges when they were out for the body work. I've had my gauges out once, to replace the speed-o cable when I did the heater core. What a PITA that is.

The stock gauge has a dummy zone where it will still show fine and then start to climb after you have a problem.

On the way to Moab I developed a leak in one of my hoses. I installed a seperate temp gauge (And boost gauge) after my SC install.

The Stock temp gauge did not move while my other temp gauge climbed to 200, 210 and at about 220 then started to climb. At 210 I was turning on the heat (turn off AC) etc and attempting to cool it down and it worked for about 50 miles. At 220 I was pulling over just as the temp gauge started to climb. After shutting the truck off the temp gauge climbed to about 225 and then the stock temp gauge climbed significantly.

So from 180- 220 deg, the stock gauge does not move and then ramps quickly above that. Too late to be pro-active.

The modification was developed by Raventai on mud and essentially changes some components to remove the dead zone.

Just get the Scangauge II, you don't have to rip you dash apart and digital readout.

x2 and it saved my butt coming back from Moab because as Ken said, once the stock gauge starts moving from center you are already close to troublesville. My stock gauge hits "center" at about 150F. I've seen it move higher twice, and it didn't start moving until the temp was 215F+ so it has a good 50-60F "dead zone" stock.

IIRC, in an 80 226F is the AC cutoff temp. So yeah, not much wiggle room once you see the stock gauge moving from its dead zone.

Scangauge II is also supposedly going to offer user programable selections such at ATF temp etc. - Basically if the ECU can report it the Scangauge can be programmed to read and display it, someday.

That said, if I ever have a need to take apart my dash I'll probably go ahead and do the temp gauge mod as well just for even more peace of mind :)

11-12-2007, 01:53 PM
Well I've had new "d" light bulbs for about 4 years now, just haven't pulled the dash. But I'd be in for a group session on this that involved the supervised pulling of the dash and someone with superior soldering skills at the ready- sounds like Tch2fly & I went to the same electrical college..

Hey in exchange I'll sign up to supervise a recliner hinge mod fest, if anyone else is interested in that. Or heck Treeroot let's trade 80's for a week- when you get yours back your 2nd rows will have 7 recline positions. When I get mine back my D will be on and my temp gage will work.. how's that for a plan.. swap trucks & trade for a mod? Tch2fly you can do me a subwoofer setup.. what's your truck need?

That mod would have come in REAL handy coming home from DIA last night...The kids were bushed and it is tough to sleep while sitting near vertical :(

As for the temp gauge mod, unfortunately I went to the same electrical college you went to as well :hill:. I planned to have my buddy do it for me (along with the auto up window mod) who does that stuff for a living but then I got the Scangauge II and sort of put it all on the back burner.

The Nak reclining seat mod is a two part ordeal. One very easy part of removing the stop so they will recline and "2" the swapping of the detant plates for multi adjustibility. The stop removal can be done in a few minutes!

Yup, if you take out the little stopper you get a little more tilt.. the long method involves trading the 2nd row gears with the gears from the 3rd row. But if you already have the hinge off, got the grinder out, etc., well then why take the bus half way home? :D

And that reminds me, I also have been wanting to do the auto-up window mod.. ok let's see if we can get all this done before Rubithon.

I'll have to look at the mod again (Edit: just got done rereading it). Looks like the best for me would be to swap the gears, remove the pin from the second row, but leave the pin in on the 3rd row (don't want the seats resting against the glass). Although really for my purposes I only need a slight recline for the 2nd row for the kiddies :)

nakman
11-15-2007, 01:18 PM
Correct Jeff, if you leave the pin out of the 3rd row you'll still have the extreme "all the way up" position, then your next position is against the glass. Unless you had the hatch open then it'll go down until it rests on the tail gate. Or, put the pin back in as you say, after you've swapped the gears and it will be like you were never in there.

But now that you got me thinking about it, I wonder if you could just leave the gear out of the 3rd row, then your only position would be the "back" one against the pin. That would actually be an upgrade in itself... might be worth a try? Unless you want your kids to sit up straight.

Hey Root!

Are you planning on putting aftermarket Bumpers on your new 80? If so, are the stock ones on your truck now in good shape & would you like to sell them when the time comes? My wife's 96 80 (also all white) came with color matched bumpers. She prefers the black end caps to the white ones she has now, so she wants me to find her some other ones. So far, I haven't been able to convince her to get some hard core bumpers... But if you are looking to unload them down the road, please keep me in mind. It could help defray the cost of your other mods.

Thanks,
Abe

Looking into this some more for the combination gauges in my truck. I have a few part numbers, see if this jives with anything.

1FZ temp sender is 83420-16040
3F-E, 22R-E, 3VZ temp sender is 83420-16010 (superseeded to 83420-20020)
I think the 5VZ temp sender is 83420-16020

So if anyone's done the 50 and 110 ohm resistor mod on a 1991 or 1992 FJ80, then the same modification will work on 22R-E and 3VZ trucks. If the temp sender on Red Chili's engine drives your dash gauge to the same spot as with the old engine, then it's probably got a similar profile. Anyone have an extra 83420-16010 temp sender? We can verify it's response and either do the same values or adjust them slightly to the right profile.

Kevin, for your convenience, having an 80 get together like this at your place seems to make sense. If that sounds too easy, I'd be happy to have everybody over to my place and I suppose it would be more readily accessible here for those from the south side. I've had about a dozen 60 series here at the house at one time before, for the 3FE Bash we had in 2005, so innundating the 'hood with a bunch of 80s shouldn't scare the neighbors too badly. No worries on this thread. I started it to document the 80 series mods and possibly spark interest in a few mods that others hadn't got around to yet. Anyone interested in custom Katskin leather for their 80s? I am placing an order with Shane for some two tone grey and dark grey fronts and rears.

Hi 'Root,

Can you tell me what the new seat leather costs? Also, is it possible for him to get just the seat bottoms, in the OEM Grey color, or does he only do customs colors?

Thanks,
Abe

You would not be able to do just seat bottoms. Between the sun that has shined on your seats for the last 10 years and color lots being differant it would be a miricle to get an exact match The new Katskin leather is an upgrade from the factory leather! It is thicker and softer! Atlass' kits are direct replacement! Check here (http://forum.ih8mud.com/merchandise-storefront/101965-correct-leather-kits-80-series-95-96-97-a.html) for more details and price.

He can do anything you need. The difference is that his leather is much better than stock and may not match exactly.

What kind of money for the Hutchinson? The centerline bead lock, with 2 piece take apart capability with DOT approval is close to 800/piece. Thanks Steve for posting the max tire size. I called Centerline to see what was up with this. And the explaination was that the bead locking thickness is based on a 35 inch tire(but I could not get a thickness or what tire company this was based on). Any how I think this to be a bit ambigous. So they made a specific size of tire as the max size for warranty purposes. Now you could mount a tire that was bigger as the rim can support this, but the bead lock area could be stress because the bead is thicker. This could also be the case if you have a bead protector on the 35 inch tire and it is lower than the bead lock as well. There is not plans currently on make the bead lock area a bit thicker to take a 37 or bigger tire. I was thinking of mounting a 36-37 inch tire on this rim. I guess I will look at bead thickness and measure the thickness of the rim as well.
Or look at the hutchenson Rim. I did look at the web site and it really does not show that much info on the rim, if it is DOT approved or not and the sizes of the rims and such. They do look Beefy. Tree do you have any specs on the rims you could share?

I ordered the Hutchinson rims. They have to be ordered to match the bead thickness of the tire you plan to run. The internal rubber insert has to be custom to seat both the inner and outer bead correctly. This insert is the beadlock. They are a 17" rim. The tires I ordered are the Toyo Open Country MT in a 35x12.5x17.

I would be leerly of a stock cased rebuilt with that much advertised increase in output! The question is HOW! If it's just a bigger rectifier set and a smaller pulley then you will have one hot little puppy that I wouldn't count on! If it has a rewound armature in addition to higher duty cycle rectifier set and some way to increase air flow then I would say its a great deal!

In my 40, they freeze to the window during the storm. When Subzali and I were coming back from Cruise Moab last year in that snow storm, I actually had to stop and break the ice off the blades to keep them going. :)

Our Subaru has them, actually a nice feature. One benefit is your windsheild is a little less suceptible to cracking when defrost is on and it's cold out, since the heater bands already partially heat up the windshield to take some of the "sting" out of the temperature difference. Also when the snow loads up below the windsheild, it tends to stay a little wetter down there with the heater on, which makes it not build up on the wiper as much. Overall it just generally seems to work a little better in heavy snow.

heated side mirrors are awesome! I used to like the auto dimming side mirrors until I had to replace one at the tune of $1,000 dollars! That is one issue with having a 1000 deductible...

LED MADNESS!!!!! (http://www.root45.com/LED_MADNESS.html)

I decided to change everything over to blue. Rods and cones be damned!!! :D

I talked to UB yesterday about setting a rev limiter at 1000 and adding a waste gate off the CO2 tank to simulate having a turbo.

yes - http://www.intercotire.com/site17.php the problem is you have to pay tax if you buy from discount.

I would assume tax on 4wheelparts as well. If they have a branch open in Colorado, it requires sales tax

Did you try the tire rack?

Discount near my house negotiates. I have saved a bundle by reseraching and negotiating tire deals there.

You only get caught once drying something in the oven or washing stuff in the dishwasher. Had my timing off when cleaning a bunch of aluminum parts for the engine build... I was sure she'd be gone longer than that.

Just kidding, I had a few extras so I modded the 40 the same day. :D

194 style bulbs in a socket. I put the superbrightleds - WLED-x5 LED Wide Angle LED bulb $ 2.99 (each) - Cool White WLED-CW5 0.95 in there (quantity 2). 1978 style cluster. I think the old school clusters use 194s to but I can't remember.

The ones that Treeroot is using are from Autolumination and Kick Ass!! I have them now in my 80 and it is a "night and day" difference.

The "Festoon Based 48 LED SMT Array Bulbs" is what is used for the center and rear dome lights in the 80,
http://autolumination.com/festoon.htm

and the "Ba9s Miniature Bayonet 48 LED SMT Array Bulbs" for the Map light...
http://autolumination.com/otherleds.htm

The difference in the 2 is really just the adapter as the SMT array itself is the same...

I am putting in another order tuesday night, so if anyone wants something, let me know. they are not cheap, but are really cool...
