I occasionally buy the Woot (http://www.woot.com/) of the day. That's how I got my inverter.

I just bought this cool watch. $20 + $5 shipping. Gets the news and weather.

Here's a review (http://www.watchreport.com/2004/11/review_of_the_s.html) of the watch. Normally retails for $150.

Cummins Onan 2000 watt generator.
$299.99 + $5 shipping. That's about 1/2 price from other places!

http://www.woot.com/

Ken, how much did you pay for your generator? And how many watts is it?

Romer

Mine is 4000 watts and was $279 and has a plug so you can plug in an RV type socket, 110 or 220

Woot.com (http://www.woot.com/) is selling the top model Roku HD-XR player for $70. I bought one -- almost bought two! If you have a Netflix account, this will rock your world.

Added benefit: telling people with Apple TV how much better your Roku is. ;)

This thing has an HDMI port. It's weird they send it with the RCA cable.

Act now. I bet this will sell out.

How does this rock w/ my Netflix account?

Sorry, not in the "Know"!

The Roku HD-XR is $99 brand new with free shipping at Amazon. Woot is getting $69.99 + $5 S/H for their refurbished HD-XR. BTW, the brand new Roku HD is $69.99 with free shipping. The main thing is the cheaper does not have 80.11N, just 802.11B/G.

TJ, the Roku can stream Netflix movies from the Internet so that you don't have to get the physical DVD. The quality is lower unless you have a major Internet pipe to your house. Our 7Mbps DSL only allows watchable movies and we have a plain old 17 year old tube TV. I'd imagine they'd look pretty bad on a HDTV unless you have very high speed (20Mbps) Internet. But when you're drunk at 11PM and want to watch Blazing Saddles for the 53rd time, it's pretty cool.

Hulk

You can put a bunch of movies in your instant queue and watch them anytime you want. We have about 30 kids movies and shows in our instant queue plus another 25 movies for us. We've been accessing the instant queue through our Wii, which works well but is not HD. Regardless, we think the movies look just fine (we have 12 Mbps DSL).

It's hard to visualize how much you'll use this, but once you start, you'll be amazed. The DVD service is now the secondary benefit to the streaming. We cut back our service from 3 DVDs to 2 DVDs, and mostly they just sit there collecting dust.

The main thing is the cheaper does not have 80.11N, just 802.11B/G.

The cheaper one also doesn't have the USB port. I could actually see hooking up a HD to the Roku, so this is a good feature.

DaveInDenver

Netflix says that standard def streaming is encoded at 2.2Mbps for regular highest quality. Some of their SD movies are 3.4Mbps, but seemingly not many. Their regular HD content is encoded at 720p and maximum quality is 5.5Mbps. Their algorithm tests the connection and picks the speed based on sustained + 40% to determine the number of bars. Thus generally to get 4 bars on HD you'd need a 7.7Mbps connection and for SD you need 3.1Mbps. We have a 7Mbps DSL and get 4 bars on SD and it's definitely blocky compared to the SD DVD.

FYI, a typical SD DVD movie with 256K audio ends up around 6.45Mbps.

Have they enabled the USB port? I understood that it was there and it didn't do anything, 'Reserved for Future Use' or something.

BTW, if you buy the new one through Amazon you seem to also get $10 credit with their VOD service.

Dunno about the USB port for sure. In the comments on Woot, a guy says you can use it if you set it up as a "channel."

The $10 VOD credit almost makes me wish I had bought the new one. I still would have purchased the XR model for the wireless N connectivity. Made a huge difference at my house when we got the N router -- our wireless LAN no longer sucks.

DaveInDenver
09-09-2010, 10:57 AM
For HD doing a 802.11N MIMO WiFi will make a pretty major difference, so getting the HD-XR does make sense for that alone. Also a lot less drops when you nuke your popcorn.

6000 of them buggers  - I wonder what their repair rate is like

Hopefully these last...I bought 2 :o - One for the family room and one for the bedroom. Now I guess I'll be giving the Netflix thing a try finally. Looks I should also plan on upgrading my Linksys router to a newer N version?

It's certainly NOT a requirement. If your wireless network works fine now, then I'd try them out with what you have. I actually have CAT5 (ethernet) to my entertainment center, but will use a wireless connection upstairs.

Helped my dad hook up his roku this afternoon. Pretty cool, though getting USB storage enabled took a bit. And it doesn't play hulu. Seems like they've got a good platform, hopefully future software releases will make it more functional. (Network enabled storage to usb, itunes, hulu, though I don't hold out hopes for most of them).

Not Woot (which is having a Woot-Off right now btw) but seems like a pretty decent deal:

500GB portable Iomega eGo HD (http://cgi.ebay.com/Iomega-eGo-500GB-USB-3.0-Portable-Hard-Drive/400165685836?_trksid=p1468660.m2000036)

$60 + free shipping

http://ak.buy.com/PI/0/500/217395410.jpg

I bought a couple of similar items awhile ago to dump a copy all my pictures, music, movies, etc. onto once a month or so and then I store the HDs in my safe.

Bummer...........

Chris,

Thank you for your recent order on Fastenal.com, we appreciate your business. We have recently identified a significant pricing error on a part that you ordered: 0717154 800 Amp 2/0 Gauge Booster Cables. When your order was placed, our site mistakenly and incorrectly showed the cost to be $2.75 when it should have been $273.99. Due to this obvious error and pricing difference, we are unable to ship this product to you at the $2.75 price.

If you would like to purchase this item at the $273.99 price we will offer free freight due to the inconvenience that this has caused. Please let us know by April 10th, as we will be cancelling these orders on April 11th if we have not received any correspondence.

Thank you and we appreciate your understanding of this situation.

Sincerely,

Fastenal Company

You guys didn't honestly think Fastenal could sell 20 lbs of copper for $3? There's dumping unsold products for cheap, but not when they can take it to a scrap yard and get $4.30/lb...

Was only hoping they made a clerical error and I would have a new set of jumper cables before that error was corrected. I don't blame them at all for putting the brakes on it, heck they stopped chtucker's shipment midway (see the mud thread).

I bet that had the early orderers kept it quiet some may have snuck through and got their cables. I'm sure the sudden "run" on something that they probably didn't sell a ton of caused a light to go off.

Next time we need to only put in an order every other day...LOL

Tim P., I was in for two sets and had you in mind for the other set :D - I was actually planning to chop my set up and use them for heavy gauge wiring to my inverter :hill:

Nope, never got them :( - From what I read no one did...The company even recalled the sets that were already shipped but not yet delivered which probably really bummed out the guy that first found and posted up about it.

That is a heck of a deal...I have the old tank style, hand pump Zodi and loved it...this is the "heat exchanger" version with the electric pump, all you need is a water source. Great to have a hot shower out in the middle of nowhere. Thanks Wes!

I found the little D cell powered pump to be very inadequate. However, the 12V clip-to-your-battery option rocks.

Zodi replaced the one with the other for me, gratis. Very impressed with their customer service.

Just be sure to drain all water out of it if it is exposed to freezing temperatures!
