1985 Toyota Truck *75,000 original miles* - $5200

Regular cab, has an ARB bullbar, saggy rear springs but otherwise looks pretty good in the low rez, small photo.

OEM PTO winch - $800 Colorado Springs

http://cosprings.craigslist.org/pts/580058211.html

Just curious: what's the obsession/fascination that folks have with PTO winches? Why would anyone prefer this over a nice modern electric winch?

Who knew there was a max size to a thread?

990 replies, and over 29,000 views. Pretty good for our little ol' club here, but that's nothing compared to, say, SOCD thread. Aren't we on the same version of VB? Not that it matters what was for sale 3 years ago anyway.. .

You obviously weren't around tractors growing up :D

An electric winch takes a PTO if you're rolled or on your side, but I think for most everything we see a PTO is more of a workhorse unit, not to mention the fact that us Land Cruiser guys are generally obsessed with anything OEM - since the trucks were designed to be fitted with one if desired, it's automatically

Tim & Timm,

I'm down to maybe enough for one oil change...I'd have to check. I went ahead and used 8 qts in Nov on the LX - that 0W makes a HUGE difference over 15W on cold morning starts :D

If one of you wants to buy the stuff you're welcome to it as I won't have a need for it now for another 6 months when the :Princess:'s rig is due for a change. Technically Timm has first dibs from last year :hill:

Timm, was there some other stuff you wanted as well? Some clips or something I had

EDIT: Found it - let me know if you still want these --> http://www.risingsun4x4club.org/forum2/showthread.php?p=47469#post47469

I have a 3-spd PTO and the winch to go with it if anyone is interested in buying one or knows someone who is. I had to take it off my FJ40 when I got my Orion. Apparently the Orion casting was a little off causing the gears to bind something awful. So I had to switch to an electric. The nice thing about a PTO is they will run all day with out overheating.:)

Yes for the 3.4 l motor, not for the 3L(which went out in 95ish), now offered for the 4l and soon (if not now) for the 5.7l motor. zoom zoom
I think I remember the supercharger not working so well with the early one or something like that(something to do with leaning out to much under WOT). I did not really pay that much attention to the article, not really cruiser related, more the dark side.

Shoot you could fit 4 FJ40s on there if you packed them nice and tight - what is the Frame length of an FJ40? Can't be MUCH more than 12 ft, if it is then you can have a couple feet hanging off the front and a couple feet hanging off the back ;) There you go $1000 apiece + tow vehicle fuel to haul your FJ40 to the Rubithon. ;)

The 5th wheel hookup is $1,600 for my Duramax. My dad just priced them last week. I could store it as long as it is legal. One of the ways I can keep the city off my ass is to put all my unregistered vehicles on a registered trailer;)

nakman
03-28-2008, 10:29 AM
Why don't you guys form a RS trailer sub-committee? Someone step up to lead, then propose the club buy the trailer, then get it. You all (those wanting to trailer a rig to Rubithon) then personally chip in and buy Mike the 5th wheel hookup, plus help with fuel. Mike also gets to use it to take his & his dad's 40's to Moab. I don't have a 40, or a rig that needs trailered, but I'd still vote in favor of that, even if the club took a small hit on the resale.

Or heck, the club already owns one trailer, maybe it just needs to own another one capable of hauling vehicles? only real issue is storage & having a club member with a truck capable of pulling the thing.. but sounds like those may be doable? Or just sell the trailer after Rubithon and give the $$ back to the club. Mike keeps the 5th wheel stuff, you all still come out way ahead on transport.

My experience has been the longer the trailer, the easier it is. But I've never backed something that long, so what do I know. OTOH, tiny trailers you can manually "correct" are probably the easiest.. or at least the easiest to get out of whatever corner you've backed yourself into.

My question...to really tow that thing with 4 40's on it wouldn't a person really need a dually? That has got to be a ton of weight just in the trailer...Throw on 4 40s (if that many would fit) and  - My FIL has that Dodge V10 w/ gooseneck that he routinely tows a horse trailer with but towing that car hauler with 4 40s on it...Oh my

Why do people pull out perfectly usable 22R-E or 3VZ engines for 5VZ conversions? I guess some people don't appreciate the holistic life benefit you are getting by driving at 40 MPH up Floyd Hill. Well, whole life term insurance is what we'll need eventually when we're creamed by a Super Duty pulling a 5th wheel pulling a ATV trailer.

Aw, he was just talking about the bellhousing. Like he intended to do it some day, but never did. But could someone decode this sentence for me? What does this mean?

The transmission and the transfer case have been changed to the floor.

He removed the transmission and transfer case and magically transformed them into a floor? Or did he mean to say they became unruly, and had to be chained to the floor? Or did he mean to say that he did not merely modify them slightly, but changed them to the core?

Asking $700 with a used 22R-E that I guess he intended to install. Not a bad price. FWIW, looks like it has a Pro Comp Stage-2 lift. As far as IFS bracket lifts go, this is probably the only one relatively worthy of off highway travel (it braces the lift brackets to the frame). Too bad the bed is all beat up, I could have used a decently straight one.

If it runs well, and is as stock as it looks, yes. Late model 40's have a lot of good upgrades.

Their downfall is poor sheetmetal. Some rust and holes would be expected, but make sure it's not totally rotten.

It looks like it has the typical rust on the back of the tub. I would want to see the floors and rear wheel wells too.

Edit:

Just saw your cross post on MUD with the additional pics. More rust that I thought. I think you can find something worth wrenching on with less rust if you're patient.

Kim really liked Neil's 4Runner at the picnic. I've been telling her that a runner would be a good rig for her. ;) She likes the removeable top of the first gen.

Not really screaming, $4000 for a clean but mostly stock IFS 4Runner seems sorta steep.

If you were open to a 2nd gen (no removable top), you can get a pretty nice truck for $2K.

Pretty much of a steal, hub-to-hub front end from probably an SAS. Heck, a pair of Aisin IFS hubs alone are worth more than $20. If someone needs this stuff, I could use some of the parts, too.

I called the guy.
If he still has the junk, what I really need is the front cross member that the front diff hangs on. The part that has 4 bolts at the front control arm hanger. There are two captured nuts that the front skid plate hangs on at the bottom, mine have been broken for a while and I have been putting long bolts through with fender washers, but it would be nice to have the original mounts so that I have two more bolts. Bud has 4 holes in the skid plate, more is better, right?

I'm going down to pick it up Thursday afternoon, I'll try to understand what you're talking about. Maybe I could check out your truck at the meeting and you could show me? He also has an '85 solid axle for sale for $300 I guess on Craigslist, plus some "rollers" and a bunch of other stuff. He was going to put the Toyota axle under his Blazer (again ) but found a full-width Dana 44 with lockers and gearing that he wanted, so he's going that route. Whatever I'm happy to bring the Toyota parts back into the fold...

DaveInDenver
08-05-2008, 02:18 PM
This part, you can see the bolt on the lower left of the photo. There is a nut welded inside there that apparently after a few years of bashing the heck out your plate will break off and rattle inside.

That's a 20 lb. tank -- be warned, it's tall. My tank is a 10 lb. unit, and most of the Powertanks are 5 or 10 lbs. The only one I know who runs a 20 lb. tank is Spiderlegs.

Sure, it is tall, but it'll be good so that you can fill tires, pressurize kegs, recharge paintball guns. Uncle Ben, seems like a perfect addition for the truck that you thought had it all. What's better than a movie night than a movie night with a proper beer tap? None of that silly constant pumping like some poor frat kid, we're higher class than that for sure.

I just have no time this weekend or I would do it. Heck even if the cylinders are scored badly I'm sure you can source a good shape 1FZ and swap engines and still make out price wise! At that price it would also make a good candidate for a fuel saver swap of somekind I would think!

Depends on whether you do the work or someone else does. You do the wiring or you spend north of $500 on a harness. Motors start at $800, most a bit north of that, and parts I would guess at no more than $500? Don't hold me to that.

You could get that one for a pretty good deal if you showed up with cash! It is a very clean 40! A little insight why you might see older Toyotas parked on that site is Justin's Grandpa and Grandma own that land and the other house there is Justin's mom's. Justin Lombardi is New Car Sales Manager at Boulder Toyota. That Cruiser belongs to the Service Manager at BT who bought it to flip for big bucks but now just needs to get rid of it. I think right now he's asking $4500 (was asking $10.5!). If I needed another FJ-40 I would snatch it up fast! It is one of the cleanest 99% original Cruisers I have ever seen!
