Just doing a little Google Maps work.

My initial route from Denver to Placerville, CA takes us north to I-80 for the entire trip. Here is a link to the map (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=8629148461092534631,39.738080,-105.013870&saddr=39.725145,-105.013504&daddr=Placerville,+CA&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=0&sz=11&sll=39.721976,-105.115814&sspn=0.452084,0.623474&ie=UTF8&ll=39.844395,-105.24765&spn=0.451281,0.623474&z=11). According to Google Maps, this is 1,175 miles – about 16 hours 37 mins.

Placerville -- how close is this to the actual entrance to the Rubicon Trail?

I don't mind hustling back and taking extra time getting out to CA. I would like to take the ferry at Hall's Crossing, go down through Big Thomson Mesa in UT and Paradox Valley in CO. I know there's other stuff I would like to see, just haven't had time to really stop and think more about it.

Here's the route I put together: LINK

Robbie says two days, but it wouldn't bother me if it took 3.

For the sake of putting everything in one place, I am posting up Dave's non-interstate route (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=5040427042718733934,38.464730,-107.689420%3B13328596645148978118,38.225110,-108.505740%3B9518541631649591403,37.872810,-109.318920%3B5609075288385980417,37.405181,-110.449186%3B17776779618086990341,37.849000,-111.031340%3B13681370560056449659,37.764850,-111.683120%3B577091016184641595,38.275470,-112.641240%3B4537471741264081822,39.061849,-114.268799%3B3737752486239260004,39.474880,-118.767790%3B17286665637891930778,38.774580,-120.295730%3B3117571893585875375,39.535810,-119.811080&time=&date=&ttype=&saddr=Denver,+CO+80210+(80210)&daddr=US-50+%4038.464730,+-107.689420+to:CO-145+%4038.225110,+-108.505740+to:US-491+%4037.872810,+-109.318920+to:UT-276+%4037.405181,+-110.449186+to:Burr+Trail+Rd%2FCR-1668+%4037.849000,+-111.031340+to:UT-12+%4037.764850,+-111.683120+to:N+Main+St+%4038.275470,+-112.641240+to:39.061849,-114.268799+to:US-50+%4039.474880,+-118.767790+to:US-50+%4038.774580,+-120.295730+to:placerville,+ca&mra=pr&via=4,6,7,10&dirflg=h&sll=38.873929,-110.522461&sspn=12.239895,26.257324&ie=UTF8&z=6&om=1). I love doing these trips on 2-lane roads, and am very tempted to ask for an additional day off, so that I can take 3 days coming back from the Rubithon and do this route.

Honestly, this also makes me reconsider my decision to bring my 80 -- a route like this in the 40 could be legendary.

Answering my own question here. Just found a map that Nakman had posted a few months ago. Looks like Placerville is 40 miles from the trailhead.

Matt,
Your routes posted on the planning stages are spot on! I-80 route is very quick and I guess I just do not see why driving a 40 or mini that way is such a big deal? That has been done since 1958 when the first American Cruiser hit our shores! Heaven forbid we save any fuel in the Luxowagons by not doing 80-90 all the way!

The part that surprises me is getting from here to Salt Lake City.

Via I-80 (WY): 533 mi about 7 hours 27 mins
Via I-70 (CO): 526 mi about 8 hours 17 mins

I haven't made this drive since 1997. Anyone have a preference?

My experience with Google has been to add a few hours to their estimate. I'd guess 20 hours.

His numbers are pretty good actually. Takes about 10 hours to get to Wendover and 6 more to get to Lake Tahoe.

We will be leaving a week earlier than most folks and had planned on doing the I-80 route to miss the BIG hills. Since we will be towing the 4Runner the fewer grades the better.

What Sharon and I are looking to figure out is where to stop on the way up here. Figuring on 8-12 hours of driving to get to Sonoma CA. Before that we would like to drop off the 4Runner somewhere near the start of the trail. That place is still to be determined and suggestions are appreciated. From there we will go to Sonoma and on to Stinson Beach and other places. We then plan on coming back to the trail head the night before and hopefully staying in a hotel/motel, any suggestions???

On the way back we may stay an extra day after and spend some time around Lake Tahoe. We would like to stay in a hotel/motel again that night so we can clean up and refresh ourselves for the drive back.

We need to be camped out close to Reno on Tuesday night, can we do that? At least one of us needs to go to downtown Reno and pick up Mr. 60wag, who is flying in. Would be funner if someone else wanted to drive up there with me, but not required. Also there's pretty beautiful camping up by N. Lake Tahoe that may be nice to do the night before the trip, not sure what's down in Placerville though I've never been there. I just don't want to be halfway to Sacto if I'm going to be driving up to Reno later, that's all.

Reno to the trail head is close to 3 hrs either way you go(straight up I80 to truckie, around the west shore, or down to carson, along south shore then out to Ice house rd). Ice house is not quite to Placierville. Once you hit Ice house rd, it is well over 1 hr(more like 1.5 hrs) to the trail head, all slow going on the pavement, winding rd. So if yo leave in the morning from Reno, you may have to leave at 5-5:30am to leave at the 9am start time. As for South lake Tahoe hotel, On the cali side is a Motel 8, I think a Hotel 9 (or something like that), When I have stayed at this place before I think I paid about 50/night. for the Motel 9 place. It was going though a remodel the last 2 years, so prices may have gone up if the remodel is done. Do not know if they allow dogs.

So what do you guys think?

Dinner/drinks/etc in Reno. Stay there Tuesday night. Drive 3 hours to the trailhead Wednesday morning.

Dinner/etc in Reno. Drive another few hours to Motel 9 or where ever. Drive 1 hour or less to the trailhead Wednesday morning.

Option 2 appeals to me, honestly. I love a cold beer, but I'm not much on gambling (other than a poker game among friends).

Why are we not staying at the campground at loon lake? skip the drive in the morning and enjoy the easy start too the day. it could be a long day on the trail. adding the extra 3 hr drive or the extra cost of a hotel seems unnessary. It would be a nice rest from the 2 days travel. We can set up a camp spot for tim and bruce so when they get in its all ready. and they can talk too us on their pork raidos, and it will be like their there.

Rachel and I will be staying at a hotel/motel coming and going. Thats one of her requests. besides, we will be on the trail from Wednesday to Sunday, plenty of time for camping.

I like option 2 Matt

Robbie, I spoke with Jon Davis and after that I looked up some motels in S Lake Tahoe, there are a bunch to choose from. When I used Google to map out the route to the trail head it came up with 62 miles and about 2hrs. Like you said small winding roads etc.

Is there a town closer to the trail head that is "quaint" and fun to stay at? I thought there was a "Rubicon" town actually or something like that. Anyway since we will be coming out near S. Lake Tahoe we figured to stay there so the tow vehicle can be there and no driving around after coming of the trail.

It's not the camping time Im talking about. It's the drive 2 days 2 nights stay in a hotel for just a few hours of crappie sleep for X amount of $ (some of us did not choose the high paying corp. job life path) get up at 5:00am drive 1.5 to 3 hours after a crappie breakfast. jump on the trail if you are there in time and spend as much as 10 hr on the trail with a group as big as ours. But I think the group can kind of split up once were in the area and choose what works for them and be at the trail head on time ready to go for a LONG day of fun in a epic setting.

Side note. one year Of the 5 I have done this We had to wait at the top of the big bowl while a commercial was being filmed. they had helicopters flying over with camera on them filming inline skaters skating the bowl at a high speed. they stooped by slamming into big gym pads. it was a cigarette add for japan. go figure

I'd definitely rather not stay in a hotel, motel or inn at all, ever. I will consider it the night after coming off the trail for a shower (not to mention marital bliss, if momma is happy, Dave is happy). I may have ended up in the corp job, but wondering about the high paying part as I sit here eating my Kroger-brand instant oatmeal. Blah.

Geez the gas is going to cost about $1000, what's another $60

I like option 2 as well, Matt. And if part of our group sets up camp, then the rest of us can catch up with them later that night, after we get our Reno on. I'd rather roll into camp late have a quick beer then crash on the ground, than get up at 5:00 and drive 3 hours to a trail... I've slept in ski area parking lots before, kind of the same deal.

With a lot of folks talking about a high speed return to COlorado, I'm a little worried about driving back solo after wheeling hard for several days. Seems like the perfect scenario for a breakdown and getting stranded in the desert. I hope at least one group can organize for a slower return caravan. :thumb:

You will need to either pay the nearly $6 a gallon price at Ice House or simply drive down to the Canyon near Placerville and fill up there (+/-$5 a gallon). You will travel at a fast pace following those guys so you won't use nearly as much fuel as you will on Wednesday.

Matt, your US40 group is linking up at 9AM in Idaho Springs?

Kirsten and I just need an approximate time to start watching for someone. As long as there's a US40 group, we will meet you somewhere along the highway about lunch time. Most likely candidate is Vernal, but depending on when we get out of here tomorrow it may be as early as Steamboat or Dinosaur. Either way, listen for us (or make occasional calls) around noon. Our back-up is probably driving straight north to I-80 and catching the group around Rock Springs. That should also be about lunch time by my estimation.

In all cases, monitoring I assume will be CB 4 and simplex 146.460MHz. Personally I'll also listen on the CCR frequencies, so if you guys coming up I-70 and US40 want to try hitting repeaters in route, I'll listen for you.

Dave, we'll be on those same freq. for both CB and Ham, and will pop over to the CCR once in while to see if we can talk. If we catch up, great. If not, we'll see you in Wendover. We can also do the cell phone thing.

Lake Tahoe is as beautiful as ever. Somewhat cold today though. We planned a day at the beach, but oh well. AC across Nevada, heat at Tahoe. Took this shot for you guys from the road at Emerald Bay.

Kevin, where are you guys getting onto 287? You taking I-25 to Ft. Collins, then cutting over? or where? Only time I've done that I tood 287 the whole way up from Laffayette.. what's the shortest path?

The last exit to Fort Collins. (Highway 14) go left (west) to Riverside Ave. That will cut Northwest and tie into 287. Onnce on 287 stay on 287 till I-80 in WY!
