Okay, being a lifelong 40 series guy, I never pictured myself in a wagon. But a 60 isn't like the station wagons my dad drove our family around in when I was growing up.

So here's the deal: My wife and I are driving to Alaska this summer with our 100 pound labrador. He won't fit in the back of my 40s or her VW bug along with all our gear for a 3 week trek. We both prefer a manual tranny so that pretty much rules out FJ62s, FJ80s, FZJ80s and UZJ100s. A nice iron pig (FJ55) would be, well, nice, but they are not exactly FS all the time like 60s are. If a nice pig came around I'd be all over it though!

Anyway, we want to buy a nice, (relatively) clean FJ60 for this trip. Cleaner and stocker is better, this isn't for a trail truck, that's what my 40s are for. A little rust is okay, I know Land Cruisers. A few little things wrong is okay. A lot of rust, or a lot of things wrong isn't okay. Lord knows I have too many projects on my plate. Must pass Colorado emissions with little to no work. High (>200k) miles might be sketchy (yes I know I just eliminated a bazillion 60s that might be for sale). Like I wrote, I am not looking for too much of a project, but am not afraid of dealing with minor stuff for the right deal.

I don't give a rat's patootie how nice the paint is, we want a reliable FJ60 to drive to AK and back. Prefer it be in the Denver area so I can look at it. No way I'm flying to god-knows wherever only to find a cracked block or 30 pounds of compression in #4. If it's out of town, I expect a cruiserhead buddy to come look it over and give me an assessment before I buy a plane ticket to come pick it up. Frankly, would prefer to be between another Rising Sun member, so I can give them crap when the smog pump seizes up on the Alcan highway. If a Rising Sun member has one, please feel free to PM me or put it on the member's-only section.

Clean FJ60s have been going for around $3k around here for some years, and I wouldn't expect too pay much more than that except for an exceptional rig from someone I know. If there's someone who has a stock-ish pig, I'd pay a premium over that. We'd consider an 80 but it must be an exception deal like John's was. We have cash, time, and patience.

So, I've probably scared off about 90% of prospective sellers. Oh well. I don't want to waste your time or mine. I know what we need, and if you have it, we're interested. Thanks and happy cruisin'!

Hey Jeff,

I saw this nice 55 on Craigslist, but there is not a price. Might be worth a call as it looks pretty straight.

Some nice 60's on there too right now. Haven't seen many in decent condition (under 200K without huge rust holes) for under $4000 though, and I watch CL pretty religously.

Here is the skinny on the pig:

Thank you for your response to my ad. Due to the overwhelming response, I have decided to write a reply to send to everyone that I hope will answer your questions!

The original owner of the truck was Ron Jon, of Ron Jon’s Surf shop. He used the truck as his surf truck for twenty years from 75-95’. He sold it to an auto body mechanic in Evergreen who bought it for his son. The son did not want it, so he sold it to the owner of Sky Country antiques in Evergreen. I bought it from him in Oct of 2006. The body is in near perfect condition. I started to notice a couple of rust spots in the past couple months - One on the hood and one on the passenger door jam. The interior is in perfect condition. There is a crack on the windshield that did not show up in the photos. The radio stopped working, but I think it is a loose wire and the A/C does not work.

In Feb of 2007, I had to have the engine rebuilt. I threw a rod. I bought the truck as my winter truck so it was not driven regularly until I lost my job in September of 2007 and used it as my primary transportation since October.

In October, I had the oil changed. They added 7 quarts of oil. And about a month ago, I threw a rod again. According to Havana Machine, who built the engine and where it is now, one connecting rod has to be crank ground, and the engine has to be reconditioned and cleaned. The odometer does not work, so I am not sure of the mileage on the new engine. The original engine had 118,900.

If you are interested, I can provide the phone number and address of Havana Machine so you may have your questions answered.

I just got a job where I will be doing a lot of driving and need something fuel efficient and reliable.

I am a single mom who fell in love with this truck, but is not a mechanic. I originally paid $11,500 and the engine cost about $7,000 to rebuild.

Please make an offer based on the information I have provided.

Lastly, I have been trying to sell it since I lost my job last year. I got a fraudulent cashier’s check, which resulted in my bank kicking me out. As a result, I will only accept cash.

Please contact me at 720-891-3323 if you need further information. Again, I am not mechanically savvy, so I may not know but I will try to find out for you.

Thanks,

Irene

I'm about to put my 86 FJ60 daily driver on the market again. I had it for sale last fall and talked my wife out of us getting rid of it, but now we are pretty certain we need a 3rd row of seats and a trail camping rig for our stable and that means an 80 for our budget. We don't need an 80 and a 60, so I'm back to selling the 60.

Details:
-Tan 1986 FJ60
-199,750 miles as of this morning's drive to work
-JK Customs front winch bumper
-33x12.5 BFG AT's on JTOutfitter 15x8 wheels
-Regular sized spare underneath (hadn't had funds to add 5th down there, even though I checked and it fits
-New battery and terminals in last 18 months
-Rear disc conversion by Cruiser Creations in NH with FJ80 master cylinder and GM calipers.
-Windshield replaced 2 years ago
-Read Add a Leafs
-New Stereo and 4 speakers - Sounds great
-Tinted windows
-Cobra CB
-Tow hitch (ball, not receiver)
-Headlights replaced with IPF European lenses and H4 bulbs. Much better than stock lighting
-All fluids replaced in last 2 years
-Timing and carb adjusted 1 month ago

The good:
-Paint in very good condition
-Interior in exceptionally good condition, read carpet a little fuzzy, but otherwise great. Seats in new condition except drivers seat foam is a little compressed
-Tires and wheels are just over a year old and have about 6000 miles on them.
-Engine starts every time.

The bad:
-Some rust on the left side. Fixable still, but probably needs some attention to fix properly. A few small spots on the upper tailgate.
-The tint on the front passenger window is coming off from the bottom and the rear driver's window had a thumb sized piece pull off last fall when I took the for sale sign off (I was happy I was going to keep it and then...jeesh)
-The suspension is still stable but is showing it's age. I was going to replace it in the next month with my tax money, but now that I am going to sell it, that's up in the air. If I do, I will list it for $1000 higher. I am flexible on this, but if you don't know come drive it and see what you think.
-Leaks a little oil and it appears to be the head gasket, but this has been a lower priority for me, so I haven't fixed it yet
-Verified carb fan works, but won't come on automatically, so there is a switch somewhere that is not working.

Overall I get lots of comments on it.

I'm looking for $5000

Email me at wprice@wts.com if you want to know more.

Thanks guys, but we're looking for a good deal on a FJ60 (in this thread at least). Decent condition, stock 60s have generally been selling (as opposed to asking) for $2-$3k or so. We will consider going up a little for a really, really nice rig. As stated at the beginning, a little rust is acceptable and expected, as is the usual tear in the left side of the bottom driver's side seat upholstery. Frame rot on the rear crossmember where you can poke a screwdriver through it is a deal breaker, as is major work needed like engine rebuilds. I can do that but have way too many other cruiser projects.

I appreciate the posts!

Hmmm - We haven't firmed our itinerary, but looking at the map it appears Homer's about 100 miles SW of Anchorage. We were definitely planning to visit Anchorage, Wasilla and Talkeetna, but those are North of Anchorage. We'll see, thanks for the head's up!

I think a similar outfit tried that scam on me as well. I followed up with the bank of warranty on the check and it was a total bogus op.

I'm selling my FJ60 with 199,900 miles if you want to come take a look at it. It's about ready for an OME upgrade, but other than that it has minor rust and the interior is mint and runs well. Winch bumper and wheels/tires too.

Interesting - with headers it's doubtful it'll pass smog. Few mechanics, even good ones, know the intracacies of FJ60 emissions systems. There is a lot of inter-dependence between the various sytems, and a lot of ways to do things wrong and only a few ways to do things right when any part of the system and subsystems are modified. And he's a dealer too! I might call him anyway. Thanks!

Yeah, you'd have to be pretty sure you wanted to buy it to go out there. You can fly to KC for $250 RT. A one-way ticket might be even cheaper, but that would make it harder to say no thanks and go back home. It's not a bad drive from KC to Denver in a single day. I have done this drive many, many times.

If you had someone you trusted to look it over, that would make it a better bet.
