View Full Version : 80 series front pinion

I thought this was interesting after UB's incident last year at CM: I ordered some back-issues of TT that were before my joining up with TLCA: Jan/Feb '03 talks about the 1st annual Surf 'n Turf. Drexx broke his front diff, and I thought the description was interesting,

"While talking with Jimmy Miller at the base of Competition Hill, Drexx's supercharged 80 series goes screaming by attempting the hill at speed! As mentioned previously, those hardly noticed dips and ruts at the base of the hill are interesting and the 80 flies through them with a distinctive snap! Drexx's speed carries the 80 to the top. Moving the Cruiser away from the crest of the dune to safely inspect the damage, Amando Mendoza and Drexx begin to disassemble the driver's side knuckle. As the rest of us congregate around our wounded brother to help, a few of us discuss the possibility of the front carrier and/or ring and pinion damage..."

Sounds kinda similar - supercharged 80, travelling at dips and bumps at speed, do we see a trend here? :D

Yup.
All 80 owners should remove those pesky locked high pinion front diffs immediately and run, not walk, to the nearest minitruck owner who will gladly dispose of them for a nominal charge.
Heck, Squishy! will do it for free, or maybe even buy you lunch.

Ahhhhh....so your saying Minitrucks are trash trucks! Now I'm starting to understand.....not only will they shake down your internal organs on a washboard road and at the same time let both full size humans inside beat the snot outta each other with flying elbows but they also can haul all the weak crap parts that Cruiser guys toss in favor of upgrades. Now I can see they have some value after all! :lmao::lmao: :bolt:

Oh yeah. Trash trucks. Awful things. We will be happy to dispose of those junk diffs. Just call me Fred Sanford. Happy to help.

UB's mighty feisty these days! :bolt:

Seems to me the common thread in breaking high pinion front diffs in 80 series trucks has something to do with them leaving the ground! Not quite sure Toyota had that service requirement in mind!

That's too bad to hear about the Cruisers, 'cause it doesn't bother mini trucks to go and fly.

Damn straight! Got a problem with that? http://www.dinicartoons.com/forum/images/smilies/Angry/blowup.gif

;) Stress is a useful tool if used correctly! :lmao::lmao:

The inside joke Mr. Toyoda did by sticking "Romper Room" parts in the mighty 80 does have a flaw but it is not leaving the ground but rather it's the landing! I have no doubt that that crap is a fine addition to any Show and Shine Mini but it has no place at a real world backcountry Starbucks! :hill::hill:

Gee, those are sporting the even weaker 7.5" diffs too. Gee.
Maybe I should downgrade my show and shine mini.

I heard a little bit different story way back then:dunno:. How his foot never came off the throttle until heard the snap crakle pop after he landed many feet after he launched off the crest of the hill. He was under full throttle when he hit the ground.
Anyhow the teeth on drex's 80 had come off where the big hole was on the carrier, Just like mine did in reverse in deep snow one time and some other folks. The carrier can allow flex if not carefull. I do think UB with the cold treatment on his RG will stand the test of time. :thumb:

FJ40s seem to do a fair job of going airborn...must be that Cruiser front diff they sport...as opposed to the mini rear diff they could sport as a front diff...

LOL! It's funny because you're right, the Bassett does looks like an FJ40, sorta awkward in the air but gets it done. Take something like an Aussie Shepherd who is lighter and quicker, they do look more natural...

Maybe not quite as proper as a Sheltie, but definitely thinking more like a sleek and agile, hard workin' little dude. Subtle, eh?
Those Bassetts are funny with their ears, but I really like how the cattle dogs look like they're trying to be Super Dog.

Mighty Mouse Theme by Philip Scheib & Marshall Barer

Mr. trouble never hangs around,
when he hears this Mighty sound,

Here I come to save the day!
That means that Mighty Mouse is on the way!

Yes sir, when there is a wrong to right,
Mighty Mouse will join the fight!

On the sea or on the land,
He's got the situation well in hand!

We know that when there's danger, we'll never dispair;
Because we know that when there's danger he is there...
On the land on the sea in the air.

We're not worrying at all
We just listen for his call
"Here I come to save the day!"
That means that Mighty Mouse is on the way.

When there is a wrong to right,
Mighty Mouse will joint the fight
"Here I come to save the day!"
That means that Mighty Mouse is on the way!

Mine is fully capable of doing 100 - now - except having the aerodynamics of a brick can become a little disconcerting. Likely to find certain parts have airfoil properties. And I have no Wildernest to deploy as a chute.

Actually, it could do 100 before. Just took a bit longer. Call it my strategy to not break the one weak cruiser part on the truck.

Revisionist history. Brontosaurs go in your 80 tank now. Mammals go in your passenger seat. PFFT!

DaveInDenver
04-01-2008, 01:23 PM
Just for clarification, I'm fairly certain The White WilderNest Wonder Truck of Doom could do 100 MPH with the bulked up gerbils under the hood, but even at 85MPH they are running their little legs off as it is with 33" tires and 5.29 gears. I wrap the tach needle over faster than the speedometer. But then again I don't mind being kind to the lil' fellas under the hood since they return the favor with 20+ MPG tanks loaded for camping. Keepin' it real.

My advise, don't jump any truck full throttle with the front locker engaged. 40, 80, or rodent variety.

p.s. the girl at Starbucks is hot, I'll be there until 10.

But you cannot deny it is amusing! It must have some appeal as the veiw count is very high for such a young thread!

Oh....and just for the record.....I wasn't at full throttle when I left the ground or came back into contact! (I wasn't on the brakes either, however) The ring gear should not have broke! ;)

All I know is that you had enough hang time to warn the ones behind you. What I heard over the CB sounded like a scene from fast and the furious. When did you add the waste gate and the rev limiter? :p:
