Howdy, well my CB don't fit in the radio hole on my 40 or in the tuffy... what gives?

Is there a decent CB that won't break the bank but will fit in a standard DIN sized slot? I don't care to open up either of the two holes to make it work, and I'd hate to remove the tuffy's cup holders as they are used LOTS more than the CB.

Maybe a weather/cb cobra or something. I have a model like that now, but it is just a hair to big to get into either location...

Funny thing is, I pulled my CD player out to put in one that will run an Ipod, and I would like to leave the other slot open to install a HAM down the road.

I like the front speaker mounted one that I have, any suggestions, or anyone got one lying around?

Yes. This is the Cobra unit (http://cobra.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=313&category_ID=30) that you want. I have it in my 80. Great radio.

Drew,

I went with the Uniden 520. Not DIN size as it is smaller (fits in the ashtray of an 80 series @ just 4.5"W x 6.75"D x 1.4"H). Seems to be a good little CB. Not a bank breaker either. IIRC when I searched for one last year Newegg.com had the best price. There is also the Uniden 510. Same size but less expensive (doesn't have some feature). Neither has WX capability though if that matters to you?

Matt, that one looks just like mine but doesn't fit...

It might be the same model too? I will check.

Thanks! Corbet, I used one of those smaller units for a while but hearing with the little speaker underneath was impossible compared to the new front speaker kind.

Thanks! Anyone else know of one that fits into a radio cage?

Both the 510 and 520 have external speaker out plugs to mount the speaker in a different spot as well.

Sweet, just looking for something to fit in the dash without modding the dash. :thumb:

If you're trying to fit it in the stock radio hole in an FJ40 dash, it will be too big. The old holes were made for earlier "shaft-style" radios with two knobs (volume and tuning). Like this one (http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Product/Item/Main.aspx?g=300&i=070XC4100&tp=5684). These holes were smaller than standard DIN. I actually cut a slightly bigger hole in my 40 dash to accommodate a DIN-style radio, and it looks really clean.

Your Tuffy won't fit a standard DIN-sized unit? Or is the Cobra unit bigger than DIN?

I have this Cobra unit and a single-DIN Sony in my 80 dash, and it fits nicely.

Radio Shack makes a smaller sized CB and I think it's $50. I bought one, used, to fit between the spreader bars of my roll cage.

No. The radio won't fit into my Tuffy DIN sized hole

And the dash has been opend up to the DIN size as well and accepts a modern CD player or radio... but not my CB  :(

It seems just a squeeze big. I might take the case apart and see what can be modded to fit.

Thanks for the help Matt, I might just cram it in there... :thumb: :hill:

I wonder if I have a different model. Weird. I thought being DIN-sized was part of the design of the radio.

Sorry, not much help.

According to this article (http://au.answers.yahoo.com/answers2/frontend.php/question?qid=20070320224010AAi8BxH), single DIN is about 7" wide by 2" high (depths vary).

The Cobra is 7.0 x 1.88 x 6.5. Does yours measure the same as this?

Yeah... I measured and the thing is too long in each direction. It is really wierd. So I pulled the cup holders :rant::rant::rant: (the only real reason to run a tuffy :D)and installed the CB for the wheeling season, or until the wallet swells enough to get into the Ham stuff at which time one of the spaces will get filled, and the CB can be moved to the spreaders in the front cage... down the road you see. :D

Here is where the CB lives after tonights mod party:thumb:

Here's the Radio Shack model I was referring to. Turns out it's $60.

Matt, it is for sure, it is about an 1/8" bigger on all sides. I even tried to pull the case off and get it to go in... no go :(

What is the specific model on yours?

Thanks Matt!

Nice job on the plug, Drew. I like Matt's CB setup in his 80. Since I went with the Scion radio , which is double DIN, I'll probably put my CB for my 80 on the back of the center console.

Mine is an 18 WX ST II. Looks like Cobra still sells the same model (http://cobra.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=313&category_ID=30) (same link as in post above).

Purchased it here:

Radio Service Center
918 South Sheridan Boulevard
Denver, CO 80226
(303) 922-8107

The nice thing about buying a CB radio from them is that they can tune your radio for maximum performance. You buy a new radio from them, then pay an extra fee (like $30) for them to open the radio and tune it up. You'll have better transmission power than a stock, out-of-the-box radio.

It's more money, but you'll get better results.

What about these two. Not the cheapest solution but might be worth if just to free up the space.

or this with the mobile adapter

I have the Midland, got it at Wal-mart for $90 it think? That price included the mobile adapter.
