I know there is a ton of info on MUD, but wondered what you local 40 owners have done to get new windshields. The guy who is taking the 68 will need one, I need one, Ricardo needs one, a guy who contacted me via Craigslist needs one. I bet there are a few more. :) What say you experts?

Toyota.. flat glass for 40's is cheap and it's the right thickness for the gaskets. It's pretty easy to install with some string too.

OEM Toyota was 110 and still available for some years. Safelight Auto Glass was 150 if I remember correctly.

So straight to Stevinson?

I vote for genuine Toyota.

I measured a genuine Toyota windshield and it was .015-.025 thicker than either a custom-cut Safelite or Elite windshield, too. Beware that some shops charge a fortune if you 'bring your own glass' - so it may be $75 to install it, not $35. Ask your Toyota dealer who they use and see if they cannot finagle a better deal on the installation. Obviously, the shop has little margin if you bring your own glass.

I called Stevenson and they can get the gaskets, but no longer have the windshields. Elite want $170 to put one in. I have not had time to call around and see if it can be done for less. I've heard that others have been able to find a glass shop that will cut one from a panel of safety glass, but here again I've not had time to research the local area to see if that is a possibility.

I'll dig up the part number and call derek. I need one for my 64 and I know the early ones are still good so the late model ones have to be too. I had a bj70 windshield send to stevinson. I have a hard time believing a 40 windscreen is discontinued.

If you need a windshield frame, Mark Algazy has a boatload of them. In fact, he's got a boatload of everything. I visited his shop this past Monday. It's a nightmare , but he's got lots of stuff. www.marksoffroad.net :D

I got one from Glenwood toyota a couple years ago for $75. Installed it myself under an hour. I too can't imagine toyota discontinue that winshield. Worst part is getting the old one out. I used a wire to install rather than string.

The

early to 65ish with the vent opening or short windshield is 56111-60011
the 66+ is 5611190800 and I know of at lest 2 toyota dealers that have them.
the 75-84 is 56111-90303 (burt toyota lists 2 in stock)

I'm not 100% sure of the 66+ windshield but it's the part sub for frame fj40-366223 and up.

I bought a new OEM windshield for my 71, gasket and lock strip (latter is for pre-75 gaskets) from Stevinson 2 years ago and put it in myself. The windshield itself was about $100 IIRC, The gasket and lock strip were maybe $30-40 or so. Unfortunately the windshield was too wide for my frame and I had to have it cut down. Stevinson offered to swap it for free but I didn't have the 2-3 days it was going to take to have it ordered in.

No kidding. It really is a two person job - one person on the inside to push while the installer maneuvers the gasket and glass into the frame. What did you use as a lubricant? When I did my last one we used glass cleaner - turned out to work better than the soapy water I had used on the one before that.

My 40 winshield lasted exactly 68 miles before it got a huge round chip in the middle. I also used Windex.

If someone is replacing weather strip with the old locking key.. I'd recommend the tool. I found this at BD which is here in denver off broadway.

I am fortunate enough to be a few blocks from a body shop, and am friends with them. They let me borrow that exact tool for my locking strip - it was perfect!

Rather than continue to hijack Randy's for sale thread, I thought it better to revive this one. Chris, thanks for the tip on Jerry at Boulder. I did not try them but will give a call tomorrow.

I need new glass for my 40 and did some searching and was happy to find this thread which states by several people that the windshield is available at Toyota for somwhere in the $100 range. Does anyone have any current info on this topic or background on what would cause those prices to TRIPLE! I called around and both Stevenson East and Burt quoted the same, Burt has one in stock....for $313!!!! Did prices skyrocket? Am I doing something wrong? What happened to the $100 windshields?

I have a 1971 and after checking with Stevinson, Burt on Brodway and with Jerry in Boulder am convinced the windshield for my vehicle is unobtanium from Toyota. I was able to get the windhsield gasket and seal. A couple of months ago, I was getting quotes between 150 and 250 from the glass shops (big and small) here in town.

you can get early models (individual wipers above and vent below) and late models (wipers below), but not mid models (wipers above, no vent below)

I got the windshied for my 74 FJ40 installed at my house last October for $140 by Safelite. That included them supplying a generic gasket. It looks and works fine, no leaks, etc.

I bought a new windshield for my 71 from Stevinson West 2 years ago for around $120. It was the wrong part (too wide by about an inch), and on install day I didn't want to wait another 3 days for them to get the right one in so I took it to a glass shop and they cut it down for around $30. After seeing how it is done, I know I can now cut my own if need be. I installed it myself and it was some work, but it was the first time I had done that job.

In years past I have had windshields cut from flat safety glass and installed for around $200 on my 76.

Sure...what's club discount 15% or something? That's peanuts compared to the 300-ish% increased price from what they apparently sold for very recently. I guess I'll have to check the glass shops.

There's MSRP, then List price, and then Club List prices (TLCA, RS, etc)...Prices can vary greatly between dealers and which "List" price they give you :)

Update: Decided I better check around at the Elites, Safelites, etc. to see what they could do. No aftermarket glass installers can even get that windshield, unless of course they get it from Toyota. It's not even available in the aftermarket anymore. I called Pilkington who is apparently one of the major glass manufacturers (they only sell to installers) and they don't even list a part number or anything.

Good news though, I was advised to call one of the local Safelite shops who can custom cut flat glass. Just talked to the guy and all I need to do is bring in a template and he can cut me a windshield for $100. Score! I'm back in business!

Wes, thanks for the tip on the trademotion website. If I hadn't found the custom option locally, I'd jump on that. $180 I can handle, $313, not so much. What's the story on that site? Are these OEM parts?

I'm sure jerry or joe will match or get close to that. Call them and see. Personally I like the toyota glass better. Tell Jerry I sent you and see what he can do.

Wow! I bought a new one from Toyota in 07 for maybe $75-80. That's an insane price jump for a flat piece of glass.
The case to retire the 40 from daily driving is growing larger year by year.
