View Full Version : Low voltage when raining/wet

I have a voltage drop (at the guage) when it's raining out. normally, the voltmeter stays at the correct place on the guage. When it's raining like this morning, I get a drop and it sits just above the 12, at idle, it's at about 10.

I had the headlights on, the radio on, and the wipers on low, that's it. To compare, at night if I have all that stuff on (and it's not wet) I get the normal slight drop, but not down to 12. and maybe at idle with that on, it'll go just above 12 (maybe 12.5)

Any thoughts on what to start chasing? It'll also do this after I wash it.

I am not an electrical guru so take this for what it is worth, 1/2 penny :twocents:

I would look for a wire that is exposed and is, I think, being grounded by the water that is creating contact. I had a similar situation where part of a bear wire was being "grounded" when I drove fast. The wire would be pushed into the body at speed but standing still it was fine. Only took me three days to figure that one out :banghead:

Good luck, I am sure one of the electrical wizards will give you the correct advice in a few :thumb:

For not being an electrical guru, Tom nailed it IMHO. Partial ground fault ('leak' to ground). Or, the exciter wire has an ohmic connection. Perhaps at the alternator.

Looks like I'll be getting up close andd personal with all the nooks and crannies of the 60. :D

Thnks for the guidance.

I am learning slowly but surely from the RS Guru's

Once I moved my CB ground wire I had no more feedback through the stereo, of course I broke my second CB antenna leaving Prichett Canyon ;)
