View Full Version : Vac Advance - dist. 77FJ40

Robbie informed me that the diaphragm on the vac advance on my dizzy has a hole in it. Looks like that part has been discontinued by Toyota. I'll search for used part.

BUT...should I just look for a whole re-man'd dizzy from Downey or Marks? Other options?? It's for the 40.

I believe Jim C rebuilds them too. (Aisan Carb guru) :thumb:

My fj60 carb is with him right now! Thanks for reminding me of that, I'll be getting in touch with him today!

So, I think I tracked down a used one from Proffitts...and I'm not anywhere near the cruiser. with the 77, does that have two vac ports or just one?

I realize there could be some goofy PO stuff going on...but wondering what that setup usually looks like.

ANd Man! these things are as rare as hen's teeth!

I'd pull it and go with an fj60 electronic coil/ignitor and dizzy... never look back! Points suck and I saw a significant jump in my MPG's with this mod.

...to eliminate those damn points (I'm also and air-cooled guy and adjust those damn points twice a year).

so, I might go that route if'n the vac advance is unobtainium. I think I'd have to get a new side cover to go with the 60 dizzy...is that true?

yes you need the side cover to account for that big honkin dizzy.

Points rock. along with single masters and replaceable oil cartridges. Don't look ahead look back

Order from nardek. 5 some years ago I got a carb and dizzy in a week and shipping was less than sor. Vac advance is out there you just need to find one. Does jim c have any or source in the states?

I haven't heard back from Jim C. after several emails and vmails - I know he can tough to get to sometimes. I got a reply back from Nardek, I think that's the direction I'll be going in.

Jeremiah might have a used one, I just need to know if that pod has two vac ports or just one for my 77.

I pm you a while ago, single port is what you want. If you go with the 60 stuff, you will need the side cover

FWIW...I got a real education on this stuff after talking with just about every supplier out there...from Specter, MAF, Downey, Marks Off Road, Wemberly in TX to proffits, to Rcky mtn cruisers and classic cruisers.

I ended up just ordering one from Narkek for about $85US shipped. It arrived yesterday. THANKS WES~!:thumb:

Here's the jist of what I learned from all this. Pretty much no one replaces the vac advance b/c they are all but ubobtanium here in the states. so here's what options I learned about...option 1. do the FJ60 dizzy swap with the side cover. option 2. go HEI 3. Have all the Cruiser suppliers laugh at you asking for a vac advance for a 77. 4. get the rebuilt older style full vac advance dist. from Marks off-road with the adjustable vac to compensate for octane - everyone said that'd work fine, too. about $225ish?

so...notice replacing the vac advance wasn't in there? :o :D well, I had already purchased the pertronix for that dizzy - the other options were more expensive for sure. Nardek had lightning fast response and shipping turnaround (keep in mind they're in AUS).

Hope that helps a fellow 77 owner...there were more details about vac retard vs. vac advance and what years they switched from one the other and back again. I Bet Jeff Zepp knows all those cutoffs by heart, I'd have to look at my notes. Interesting stuff for sure.

Make sure as hell that dizzy is seated right before you fire it up and drive off.

Which one did you get?
