View Full Version : REal Time: Crank no start...

It's my 93

Okay, drove the cruiser around running errands last night. Came home shut if off to run inside real quick and change clothes. Went back out to start and just cranked and sputtered for a few seconds and that was it.

Cranks and cranks, but no fire.

CEL is on like normal when you go to start.

Replaced EFI main fuse with the fuse from my wife's 80. Same thing, no start.

Checked all fuses, all fuses good.

Fuel filter is around 1.5 years old.

I sprayed a SMALL amount of starting fluid, then cranked. She fires and sputters on that. That leads me to believe it's fuel related.

How should I go about figuring if it's the pump or the filter? Or a relay for the pump?

On the 22R-E there's a bypass in the diagnostic plug that forces the fuel pump to run with the key, eliminating the interlock in the AFM. If that makes it work then you are probably not dealing with a fuel pump issue. If it still does not start, then I would check the relay next. If neither of those is the problem, then it's got to be something making the ECU unhappy, sensor, broken wire, clog in the fuel lines or something. But you'd have to look in the FSM to find the connection to make the fuel pump run with the key. Also being a 1FZ the EFI system is more complex than a 22R-E or 3FE, so the conditions to make the ECU happy are somewhat more touchy. Oh, also pull the codes, that might tell you whats wrong. I assume the 1FZ does the flash-the-CEL trick.

After a few hours of messing around we found the culprit.

A loose wire on the fuel pump.:D I like free fixes.

Went wheeling on saturday up storm mountain. Was a good time. Especially when all the Rubicon owners were thinking I was crazy for taking a mall wagon on the "hard" line that they didn't/couldn't/wouldn't do. :D Good thing it climbed up it nicely.

My friends CJ was the only other one to make it up it. :thumb:
