So I blew up the clutch in my 76 40 (the pressure plate or whatever the Asbestos disc is called disintigrated).

Having never done one on a vehicle with the engine & tranny in it, can anyone tell me if you have to remove the tranny to replace it, or can it be done with everything in there? Also, how long does it normally take to replace one? Anybody have any tips, etc on how best to do it?

You have to pull the tranny and xfer. It's at least a day unless you've done them before on a regular basis

Thanks Wes! Can you tell me how technical it is? Can I do it by myself with a socket set & a few other tools & my manuals, or does it take more?

If I shouldn't try it myself, can anyone give me an estimate of what it would cost to have done?

If you can get a floor jack with a tranny mount, it will help immensely. IIRC, the rest is just normal tools.

Abe, if you decide to do this on your own and the scheduling works out I would like to lend a "learning" hand. I have not ever replaced a clutch and would like to take part in doing one so that I can get some first hand experience. Well, I was there when we put the clutch in of Timmbuck2's 40, but we had the engine, transmission and transfer case out of the truck so it will be a bit different doing it when all of this is in the truck.

Having done it both ways, I'd recommend pulling the engine/trans/xfer as a unit. It takes more people and cursing to just pull the tranny/xfer. Regardless, you might review the procedure in the Haynes manual so you get a good overview. Don't try to hurry, and recall that you typically have the flywheel turned while it's out (adding a day to the job). If you pull the engine, you can then very easily replace the side cover and manifold gaskets, too. My .02 worth.

Getting the tranny in and out is almost a 2 man job. I think you could probably find a local garage that would cost around $750 if you supplied them the clutch. Might as well replace the rear main and surface the flywheel when out.
