I went down to the South Colony Lakes area this weekend to attempt Crestone Peak, Kit Carson Peak, and Humboldt Peak. We were only successful at Humboldt Peak, however, due to snow conditions on Crestone Peak and other weather and timing factors that kept us from attempting Kit Carson Peak and decide to do some fishing instead ;)

Anyway, on the drive down I was plugged into 145.145 in Denver on my FT7800. I could hear it all the way into the Deckers Valley and was able to hit it from that location too, on 50W. I know I'm probably not reaching it in a straight line, but I did the straight line and elevation profile just for kicks and this is what I found:

Then I switched to my FT60R once we got up in the South Colony Lakes Valley, and I was disappointed to find that the Westcliffe repeater was not hearing me, though I think I hit the Canon City repeater on 70cm from the top of Humboldt Peak. Here's what that distance/elevation looks like:

What surprised me, though, is that I was able to hear (though not transmit through to) the CC Salida repeater. I just looked it up, it's 44 miles across a lot of rough country! Again I know I'm probably not reaching it in a straight line (the signal is probably going down the San Luis Valley and curving back up the drainage I could hear it from), but I did the straight line and elevation profile just for kicks and this is what I found:

Yeah I'm a super geek I know
