Hi all,

Thought you might get a kick out of hearing a fun Labor day wheeling story....

Normally Melinda and I go to Moab over Labor Day weekend with 5 other families to mountain bike and bake in the still hot sun at the condo pool where we rent.

This year, I mentioned that I was definately bringing my FJC and that I wanted to do some 4x4ing as well as mtn biking...

One of our Moab families is Paul Larger and his wife Cary, whom just sold his old FJ40 and has been driving around in a stock '94 FJ80, but looking for a new to him 80 to fix up for wheeling..

Paul and Carry were also at the Rally this year looking around and I introduced Paul to Ken, Dan and Robbie.

My neighbor Kirk Smith was also at the Rally. Kirk grew up with Mike Goodnight, many of you know Mike, pretty well known as he rebuilds FJ40s in GJ.

Mike was in town at Kirk's house with another buddy John for the weekend. They were spending the weekend working on a new FJ40 that Kirk just bought. Turns out John was selling a really nice built up 80. So at the Rally, I introduced Paul to Mike, Kirk and John.

Long story short, on the way to Moab this weekend Paul stopped in GJ and bought John's 80.

So of course we had to test it out on Hell's Revenge.....

We headed out on Sunday afternoon with our two rigs to Hell's Revenge at about 3:30 pm. Uncharacteristically stormy weather all around and against my better judgement, I am scurrying to air down for fear of an aborted mission if the sky opens up and it starts dumping on us.

The first section as you know gets your attention.. I am leading...Yes that is aalso a scarry thought..I am trying to remember the trail from May, which seems an eternity ago...Trail map in hand but it is a ton different as you all know when you are leading vs. following a line of experienced drivers and rigs...I looked around and my favorite Hell's Revenge trail leader Dave Brown, was no where to be found....Rats.. I guess I am on my own...

So we are meandering about and I have two buddies in with me as well.. All eyes are wide open and the disccussion begins about their rigs and how could they modify them to do this next year. One buddy has a Chevy Tahoe and the other a Land Rover with 22 inch rims...These two guys were like two Chatty Kathy dolls...And I am trying to lead and drive this trail....it was pretty funny, as at times I had to tell them to pipe down so I would not go careening off the trail.

Well, being the rookie that I am, I turn left and head to the Hot Tubs and miss Hell's Gate all together..rats...

They are going crazy over the big hot tub feature as Paul and I do it no problem..We decide to continue to head back, all are ok to skip going back to look for Hell's Gate and I remember the Tip Over Challenge feature that I skipped with Dave Brown during CM.

After some discussion and walking the feature, Paul recommends I skip it as he does not have a winch yet and "Dude if you roll, you will be waiting here a while to get your rig flopped back over"....And older Mini rolls up with 37s and

I figure ok 2 rigs are here, and I visualize my line a few more times. I jump in and go for it, a bit of chirping of the tires and WaLa I am up and done with no tipping what so ever...

Feeling pretty proud of that accomplishment, I can't help but think of all you guys that have taken time to help me this year.

Now can someone please help me figure out which GPS to buy because I am terrible at reading maps and written directions.....

By the way, Paul and Kirk would like to come with to the next meeting, is it this Wednesday? 7:30?

Since you already have a SmugMug account you can post lots of photos easily.

When you go to your smugmug page, click on a photo. When the photo appears , choose the size you want, then right click on it and choose "view image". It will open the individual photo in a new window with it's own URL and .jpg tag. Copy this url and then in your posts on the forum, choose the http://www.risingsun4x4club.org/forum2/images/editor/insertimage.gif icon and then paste the url into it and then the photo will appear in your thread. :)
