View Full Version : Wilderness campaign ramping up!

The 'Hidden Gems' group, a wilderness-advocacy group, is wanting new Wilderness designation for several areas including those in the White River National Forest.

This is from their recent newsletter:
Travel Management Plan: volunteers needed
Although the days are getting shorter, the Hidden Gems Campaign is not winding down! We are instead building up to participate in the comment period for the Draft Travel Management Plan for the White River National Forest, starting in early October. And we need your volunteer help!
The Travel Management Plan will determine the forest-wide motorized road and trail system, and therefore directly influences whether the areas in the Hidden Gems wilderness proposal meet the necessary qualifications for wilderness designation. If motorized routes are designated in our proposed wilderness areas, it will make wilderness designation much more challenging, if not impossible. We need help reviewing, fact-checking on the ground, and providing comments about the plant to the Forest Service. Please contact Anya Byers at (email deleted) or 303-xxx-xxxx to learn more about how you can help with this process!

What does this mean? Until the Draft Travel Management Plan comes out, we cannot say with specificity, but it will certainly mean they will STRONGLY advocate for trail closures in any of the areas they want for Wilderness. Which does beg the question, do these areas qualify for Wilderness? They do not - unless they get us kicked out.

So be prepared to write comments when the DTMP comes out!!
