I am replacing the headgasket on a 2f out of an 87 fj60 and had the head checked, They said it was off by 6 thousands of an inch in the middle. Does the head have to be shaved or and if so can it be shaved that much?

Thanks

2F head decks are thick! Shaving it .008" will raise your comp 1/2 a point in compression ratio and you will have no durabliity issues. The rowdy F in my 40 had the head shaved .008 and the deck shaved .004! Even with Chevy valves, custom cam and forged pistons the stock valve reliefs were deep enough!

Thanks for the quick reply. Looks like off to the machine shop.

I thought that Mark W said in a old article that you could shave up to .100, which is quite a lot. But even when I did Steve (crash) head for his rebuild, I believe that we went .060 on that with not much ill effects.
So UB are you thinking that .080 is what you may of done, I do not think that shaving .008 will bump the compression 1/2 of, but think that .080 will.

I believe you are right sir! When I typed that I thought 8/1000 seems pretty light but 80/1000 seemed like too much. Thank you Sir Robbie for keeping me in check! ;)
