Thats an old one.

There isn't an article yet, since they just finished. I got this from another guy who was there and competing. His name is Sean, goes by devinsixtyseven on the boards.

It would show up at Expedition Portal (http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/).

First thread I've seen over there, but no Jacket yet.

Thanks guys. I'm just getting acclimated to civilization again after nearly a week in the desert, as are most of the folks that were down there. The people associated with Overland Journal are first class all the way, and they put on a great event. There were seminars on things like tire repair, map and compass, GPS's, Tread Lightly, etc., plus a Happy Hour competition that got most of the attention. The competition itself was divided up into a number of individual and team events:

- Navigation Challenge
- Sand Course (closed course timed race)
- Stuck Challenge
- Timed tire repair

plus a couple of team challenges where we had to improvise to move one or more vehicles over sand or water using straps, hi-lift, etc.

Lots of cool rigs of all makes and models (Rovers, Cruisers, Jeeps, Tacomas, Mitsubishi, and even a Dodge Powerwagon), and some of the sweetest setups for long distance travel I've ever seen.

And I think some of you probably know Scott Jensen (pskhaat), who coordinated a lot of the event details. He said to pass along a hello to you guys.

Matt, are you going to tell us more or are we going to have to wait until we read about it all in OJ? I find it very plausible that a Rising Sun member would win a Happy Hour competition! More details, please, and pics too, if you can.
Congrats and way to represent!!

They have yet to post anything official as far as results, but there's some jibber-jabber and pics here:

http://expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=19850

And the planning thread
http://expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16648

The "what it is" details would take me too long to type, but it boiled down to:

1. Navigation course: 12 waypoints in 2.5 hours, plus "bonus points" at many of the locations (like extra points for a cup of water, or answering some questions, or using a compass to find a bearing). This was the morning after the Happy Hour event, and I puked immediately after finishing the challenge.
2. Closed Sand Course: Timed race in a sandy wash - that's where most of the pictures are showing up from in the other threads, since everyone gets to stand around watch each participant run the race. A couple folks (including Paul May's 100 series from Equipt1) caught some good air on the final stretch.
3. Stuck challenge: Basically bury your truck in sand on a 45* hill, and then you get 20 minutes to try and get unstuck (without going backwards), and crest the hill.
4. Tire repair: A timed event to plug a hole in a punctured tire and then reinflate it.

Plus a couple of additional team events: moving a truck across the sand using the hi-lift as a come-a-long, and towing 5 trucks across a measured distance using straps that were not allowed to touch the ground. And some other random Q&A, classes and seminars, and an overland route after the event.

So I don't really know how all the scoring works, but I know that I won 1st place in the Navigation and 1st place overall for total points. I'm hoping that the OS publishes some of the details of the scoring, which I've seen them do in the past.

If and when more details get posted up, I'll share them. Oh - and I won a pretty nice Delorme GPS, RAM mount, battery charger, a DVD from Expo Trophy 2006, and last but not least a National Luna Split Charger kit for a dual battery system.

It was really a great event put on by some really classy folks. I really didn't go with the intention of competing hard and/or winning the event, so I was completely floored by the outcome. Definitely one of the best experiences of my life....

Matt,
Great pics and I see the secret to your success: Stranahan's!!! Good stuff, Maynard. Had you been training for this event or did you just go down to check out what was going on? Looks like a ton of fun.

You have to send in a registration when they announce the event (it's annual, going for a couple of years now) and people sending in applications are pulled from a lottery to determine attendees. There is additionally a screening in that you have to meet a couple of requirements to even be eligible, like certain level of truck & modifications (ability to do 3-ish trails and generally same as TLCA requires: fire extinguisher, Hi-Lift, CB), GPS-equipped, camping sufficiency, etc.

5 nights, 2 sites. Keep an eye on the link I posted earlier and hopefully some others will post up. I don't know if the OJ/OS staff has plans for the pictures and video they took - in the past they've used the footage to sell DVD's and other stuff.

Only the good stuff when your entertaining :p: That other bottle is a nice Tequila Blanco infused with cherries, pears and some simple syrup. Yum...

Honestly, I did nothing to prepare (except running Holy Cross ;)). I wasn't even sure if I was going to compete in the events at first, but then I figured why not - it'll be fun no matter how good or bad I do. I guess I'm glad I competed....
