So Wes....do you have two extra led's? ;)

wesintl

probably. we'll see how good of a ham I am with the soldering iron.:D

I'm assuming all the yaesu's use the same leds. I guess I'll find out when I open the 1802.

Just get the FT-857D all mode and you can change them at the flick of a button.

Really want one of the FT-857D's , but have more than one rig to outfit, and already have the FT-8900.... almost had an 857D for $400.00, but was just a bit too late:(

Well, for those folks with an 1802 don't bother they use a different led which I don't think a regular user would be able to swap out. Have fun you all with the 8900's

Think most of the club either has 7800's or 8800's.

I don't know if the 2800's are the same but there are a number of people with 1802's and 2800's

I'm not sure what I will put in the 40 yet.....The Bluetooth VX-8r does have my interest as that would be perfect in a vehicle you can only hears the sweet sound of Swampers in. The issue is cost!!!!!!! The radio is expensive and then you need to buy the Bluetooth card and headset!

I am going to swap out the surface mount LEDs in the handset too Wes. Is that the kind of LED you were seeing in the 1802?

yes.. they are small. I'd need tweezers and a different gun. Have you replaced those before?

Heck no but I don't know how to build 80s either. Only way to learn is to try it.
6 3mm green LEDs ordered. 2 for UB, 2 for Quiggles, 2 for someone else if we don't fry any puttin' in LEDs for UB and Quiggles.

True, I'm not willing to kill the display at this time. I'll let someone else be the guinea pig. They are very, very small and don't look like they are easily replaced.

Once you have it figured out let me know:D

You guys are welcome to use my solder station at home. I have very fine tips for SMC parts. Or if you want to swing by here at work in the evening or weekend, we have very nice rework stations with scopes and everything (NASA qualified even!).

The little bitty tabs on the side are the solder points

Off the subject Danny Chapparo was asking about Winch rope today. I told her you were very knowledgable about it....

I'm seriously impressed, I can't solder 0603 and 0402 parts without the scopes. BTW, if anyone wonders, 0402 designates a part that is 0.040" x 0.020" in dimension. Literally a speck on paper. Root's LEDs are 0603.

This is what 0402 look like on a penny. And a few SMD parts, 0201, 0402, 0603 and 0805 on top of a 28-pin DIP that's a little less than 1.5" long.

I'm bummed 'cause my FT-90R came blue out of the box and it looks out of place in my dash. And the mic LEDs are standard Yaesu amber tho you can switch them off. It would probably benefit from brighter LEDs as there is no brightness/contrast combination that helps me see it in daylight. Maybe I need that cataract surgery sooner than later...
