I installed my Saginaw pump/Toyota gearbox power steering system. Since it is what I had always used for years, I filled the system with GM style ATF fluid. Seems to work fine. But, there was an article in one of the Toyota magazines about installing a kit like this and they made a huge deal about how important it was to use htdraulic fluid and NOT ATF.

Fact or fiction? I can drain and flush it and re-fill with hyd fluid but I don't want to do it unless it really will make a difference.

General rule of thumb....use whatever fluid the pump calls for! In your case Dexron should be fine! NOTE: The newer blends of Dexron II and III are not as well suited for power steering applications as Dexron is. It is a safe bet to use power steering fluid as a replacement. The II and III use more seal conditioners than did the original Dexron which tends to cause premature leaking due to the seals getting too soft.
